The Canes kick off an Ontario back to back weekend in Hogtown.

The Canes put on a defensive master class on Thursday, shutting out the high flying Panthers. They limited the top line to a combined 4 shots on goal and only surrendered 21 in total. The Panthers had 3 shot attempts at 5 on 5 in the 3rd period. Kuzy and Guentzel both broke their ducks, although Guentzel’s assist wasn’t awarded until after the game. The Canes didn’t practice or meet the press yesterday so we won’t find out who mans the goal until later, but I’d expect Kochetkov tonight and Andersen tomorrow.

The Leafs are pretty well locked into 3rd in the Atlantic, 9 points behind the Bruins, 8 ahead of the Lightning. They’re 7-3 in their last 10, coming off a 6-2 win over the Flyers. They’re 21-9-1 this calendar year. Auston Matthews leads the league with 55 goals. William Nylander and Mitch Marner each have 51 assists, but Marner is out. Nylander’s 86 points has him tied for 9th in the league, with Matthews among others. Like the Canes, the Leafs have had their own struggles in goal. Also like the Canes, they’ve turned things around since January 1. Ilya Samsonov was placed on waivers on January 1 and recalled on January 10 without playing a game for the Marlies. Since his recall, he’s 13-3 with a 2.35 GAA and .912 Save %. The Leafs are carrying 3 goalies, with Martin Jones and Joseph Woll also on the roster. Jones hasn't played in 3 weeks and was listed as day to day with a minor injury. Woll has played 3 games since his recall in mid-February and hasn’t been that good, going 1-2 at 3.36/.881. With 4 - 20 goal scorers, the Leafs can score, they’re 3rd in the league. They’re 19th in goals against but since January 1 they’re 8th. They’re 4th on the PP but the PK is 23rd.

Black jerseys tonight, the Leafs are wearing their white St. Pats jerseys. Bally Sports South for TV

Test of focus tonight after two slugfests at home. You've got to keep it tidy against the Leafs, get on the forecheck hard and take your chances when you get them.

Wondering about our "Chaos Line" when we don't have last change matchup advantage as well... how well will that trio defend against what the Leafs put up against them will be interesting to watch.

Fast moves onto the 1st line. Kochetkov in goal.

Svechnikov - Aho - Fast
Guentzel - Kuznetsov - Necas
Martinook - Staal - Jarvis
Lemieux - Kotkaniemi - Noesen

Dan O'Rourke and Steve Kozari tonight. Over 2500 NHL games between them. Even so I expect them to get sucked into the home crowd and leave the Canes killing a lot of penalties while letting the Leafs dmen get away with all kinds of crap.

We're 29th in powerplay opportunities and have been 29th from the year we drafted Matthews (2016-2017) to this year.

Two flipping breakaways, first Tavares off a turnover at the offensive blue line, then Nylander off a neutral zone turnover.

Another offensive blue line turnover ends up in the back of the net. Canes are treating the puck like it’s a live grenade, no one wants it.
