GDT: Canes @ Panthers, 1/2/25, 7pm Eastern

Refs call a fraction of the shit he pulls, it’s like a separate rulebook for that clown.
He and his dumber brother are volume offenders. They figure, correctly, that the refs aren't gonna turn every game into a parade to the box so they just overwhelm them with judgement calls. It's ridiculous what those two get away with. They both looked at Corey Perry's career and figured, hey ... what if we just turned that accidentally on purpose thing up to 11.

And on that specific play, I'd love an explanation from the refs on why there was no tripping call in the first place. They more than likely only let KK's initial contact with Bob go because he got tripped. So what is stopping you from calling that trip? Are you scared of Mo? Tkachuk? Florida Man in the stands? It worked out for Carolina because they bungled around and let Slavin's goal stand, but you've GOT to make that initial call.

Yup. He finished with 2 saves above expected, and honestly that seemed a bit stingy to me. About time too. He had been pretty pedestrian in his last 3 or 4 starts.
In his last 6 starts going back to 12/15, he’s at 2.01/.922. That’s not pedestrian. In his last 4 he’s 2.23/.910

And yet again we hit the point where my tipping point differs from the counting stats. His number were OK, the results were OK (at best) ... but I'm seeing a lack of focus in a few leaky ones allowed at really bad times. We're probably talking 3 out of 4 starts that were an issue for me in this recent stretch. He was terrific against the Rangers on 12/22 and again last night but I'm continuing to see a lack of consistency from Kochetkov. While it's not perfect, +/- expected goals probably expresses my concerns best ... and Kooch was under water 3 out of his last 4 games prior to last night. And his focus tends to get better when he faces a good team and/or a team the Canes hate, which mirrors a problem with the Hurricanes in general over what's turning into 3 consecutive seasons now.

PK has been like Freddie in the playoffs. The overall counting numbers are fine, but the leaky/bad goals all seem to be killers. Add in the occasional 'WTF were you thinking!' moments and you get what PK is....sometimes exceptional goalie who allows too many bad goals to be someone you can rely on as a Cup winning goalie.

The difference between Dustin Tokarski and Pyotr Kochetkov is that Tokarski makes all of the routine saves, but is not going to make many exceptional saves. PK is going to make spectacular saves but allow too many leaky goals. Spencer Martin allows leaky goals and cannot make spectacular saves. Freddie makes routine saves and spectacular saves but spring leaks in the playoffs.

Which takes us all to this post season and beyond…what might be the long term option? It certainly remains the elephant in the room when you talk about long term success and a future Cup chance for this team. Freddy for all intents and purposes is riding out his contract here, Pyotr is who he is and likely will never break his flaws we all see often, and no can’t miss young goalie prospect to be found in the system as the next man up…

Well, looking at the past few Cup winners doesn't really shed much light.
Florida - you've got whatever the heck Bob is, which is mostly over-paid ... until it isn't.
Vegas - paid pretty big bucks to two guys who didn't play when they actually won and rode Aiden Hill, Laurent Brossoit and Logan Thompson to silverware. OK, sure. That's repeatable. In another 100 years.
Colorado - won with lukewarm goalie play from a guy that they basically abandoned after winning
Then you hit the Tampa dynasty and they got BIG mileage out of a true franchise goalie. Meanwhile you've got lightning in a bottle from Binnington and Holtby's good but not great self sprinkled in to make sure the water stays muddy.

So, which is it? Do you need a real franchise keeper or not? Because the bulk of the evidence trends towards not. Maybe you just need a streaky guy like Kooch to get hot at the right time.

You can overcome leaky goalies in the playoffs by either playing suffocating defense OR by scoring a boatload of goals. That has been a problem for the Canes of course....the PP completely disappears in the playoffs and our vaunted Penalty killing suddenly looks like 4 skaters with no clue what they are doing.

I definitely don't like that the Canes are more reliant than ever on PP1 to score goals this season. Not saying that I want PP1 to do worse of course, but we better get 5v5 figured out at some point.

My biggest concern with our team has been and still is Svech. We've made a huge investment in him, and he has mostly disappeared this season. It's not just his scoring that's gone AWOL, but it's his puck management and physical play, too. There's too much heart and talent in the guy, so I just keep hoping he'll come out of it, whatever it is.

Like McElhinney against the Islanders in 2019?
