The State Fair roadie begins.

Whatever ailed the Canes on opening night was fixed, at least for 1 game, the last time out. They got contributions from all 4 lines, Jackson Blake got his first NHL goal and Kochetkov was good when needed, in between 2 hiccups. The lines haven’t changed in practice and Brendan Lemieux cleared waivers and was sent to Chicago. PuckPedia shows Riley Stillman off the roster too, although the Canes website hasn’t said anything. I can’t believe they’d go on an extended road trip with only 18 skaters, but banking cap space is king. With a back to back, we’ll see both goalies this weekend, I suspect Andersen gets the nod tonight, we’ll see how they skate this morning.

The Pens are 3-2 so far, coming off a 6-5 OT win against the Slugs. Crosby and Malkin both hit milestones, Crosby with his 1,600th point, Malkin with his 500th goal. The Pens joined the Habs as the only teams in NHL history with at least 3 - 500 goal scorers. Rickard Rakell leads with 3 goals, Malkin has 9 assists. In goal, nominal starter Tristan Jarry has been awful, sporting a 5.47/.836 stat line in 3 games. He's backed up by rookie Joel Blomqvist who is at 2.86/.913 in 2 starts and 1 relief appearance. He was their 2nd round pick in 2020 and had a good season in the AHL last year, his first full season in North America, posting 2.16/.921 in 45 games.

Yeah, that Pens defense is not good and the forwards don't give them a ton of help. The goalie play has been all over the place, but I think it's as much a factor of how much they ask of those guys as anything else. Sullivan used to get relatively responsible system play out his whole group, but those days seem long gone at this point. Pittsburgh can absolutely score their way out of trouble, but they're set up like that's Plan A. Carolina's the complete opposite, of course, so this one is battle of wills ... sort of. If the Pens let Carolina chew possession then it could be a long, frustrating night for them. And if Carolina lets Pittsburgh turn the scoreboard into a pinball machine, it could be a long frustrating night for the Hurricanes.

Oh, and I'm not digging either Puck Pedia or Cap Wages when it comes to keeping up with roster moves.

Moron contractor for AT&T moving fiber on New Bern cut the damned fiber yet again yesterday. Fifth damned time in 7 months. I'd like to firebomb all their equipment, but New Bern has too much traffic on it for my old, fat ass to be stealthy about it. Stupid fucktards.

Per Walt Ruff, Andersen was first off the ice so he’s starting. No lineup changes.

That, and if you haven't heard this all over NHL Radio on satellite, the Hurricanes have taken a step back this season and may not even make the playoffs so this is a good game to get Blomqvist on the right side of his game.
