GDT: Canes @ Rangers 5/13 7:00

I give you credit, after the Canes post season ends, I pretty much check out until training camp.

I almost checked out after Game 3. Not because of the team performance because they’ve played well overall…. Just felt like a doomed series after all the special teams ineptness that was completely unexpected. But, we all know this team never quits, so neither will I.

I have to watch the competition for the Stanley Cup. Sometimes I don't give a {Polar's word} who wins, but I love the game too much. I also know that baseball, Nascar, and golf will be the predominant broadcast tv sports afterwards & I just don't give a flip about any of them.

I don't often love who's in still in the running for the Stanley Cup and I am capable of turning it off at any time. I'm glad Vegas is out and will love to see Boston get bounced.

I also get disgusted by the lack of quality of NHL officiating. The blatant disregard for rules frustrates the hell out of me and thoroughly pisses me off well into the next season.

They passed up so many good looks for two periods and would not shoot the puck, and that pp was just so so bad yet again. Staal carried them on his back, now go win another one then anything can happen in a game 7!

Exhilarating 3rd period sucked the life out of the MSG and gave hope to the Caniac Nation. The long odds are still against us, but let's hope the Canes can build on the confidence gained with such a dominating performance in the 3rd. The Rags looked shocked and deflated, but they'll be ready for the game in Raleigh. So must we.

Look, it's a 3-2 series now ... not 3-0, and the Canes haven't had to go any deeper down the well than they do to win basically every game they've won. Go home, get that one and then see how it goes. This Rangers team has a remarkable amount of self belief for a team that's never actually accomplished anything, but they looked a bit lost in the 3rd last night.

Maybe a couple more days off in this series sees Pesce make a remarkable return and bump TDA to the press box, that would certainly give the D corps a boost.

Tony wasn't absolute trash last night, but Brindy hid that paring so hard that I'm concerned about how much they miss Skjei at even strength. That bomb that Kuznetzov finished off is a case in point. Skjei has the heaviest point shot on the team and for the bulk of the season he and Pesce were playing with the 1st or 2nd line.

The series is basically on serve now. Better than that though because if we force a game 7 there’ll be no doubt that we can win at MSG and get to Shesterkin in his house. We’ve played them 5 times and they’ve won one—-ONE—in regulation. And it was the first game and it was at MSG. We’ve won the last two in regulation, including one on the road. This is anybody’s series.

You know what? Who gives a crap about Shesterkin and his house and all that stuff? He hasn't been consistently excellent since the year he won the Vezina and I'm getting tired of people putting him on par with guys like Vasilevskiy who have actually won something more than a single individual award and who put up year after year of excellent results. He's been fine in this series, but nothing special. Freddie hasn't been anywhere near his best and yet the current state of this thing has roughly zero to do with goalies at this point. He's a really good goalie, but nothing more than that.

Somewhere I saw that RBA said Pesce wouldn't play this series. I'll have to try to find it but IIRC it was a reliable source (Walt or someone).
Boy could we use him for these last 2 games.

People keep putting Shesterkin in the upper echelons of goaltenders, but he hasn't been at that level at all this year. Has he gone on great streaks? Sure, but what solid goalie doesn't? Shesterkin is a top goaltender in this league right now, but he's not 2023 Bobrovsky in rounds 2-3, and he's no where near the best of the best. He's been a 2002 Theodore at best.

I haven't seen that from Walt, but it absolutely wouldn't be a surprise. Whatever he injured, there's no way you throw him into that blender witout a few good, heard practices and recoveries under his belt. Dude only got back on the ice on Sunday.

If some how, some way they can get a couple more games out of DeAngelo to match last night, it's going to be fine.

High danger stats are all over the place because it's so stinking subjective. I don't see how a reasonable human could have watched that game and given NYR zero HDC for the entire game, basically. Strictly going off my less than reliable memory I can think of three. I will say though, that even during the 2nd period when I thought the Rangers did a great job of being a wet blanket and frustrating in their D zone, Carolina kept their poise and positional discipline quite well. When you think of elimination games you often think of teams "playing with their hair on fire" but more often than not it's teams that keep their cool, maintain their discipline and stick to their systems that get the job done with their backs to the wall. The rest just go down with a big messy bang instead of with a whimper. Eventually, the Canes broke through with an opportunity off of a terrible NYR line change, a rebound chance created by a lazy/inept back check by Panarin and an effort goal generated by the forecheck. Basic stuff, really. Aside from Staal's stretching finish, none of it was particularly noteworthy. Just solid, basic Canes hockey.

I will say that I don't recall any HDC coming on the NY power play though. Aside from the Rangers first PP opportunity when they moved the puck quite well, Carolina did a good job of keeping up the pressure while maintaining their shape. That second part was a real bug-a-bear for the Canes in the first 3 games of the series.

Also, it's worth noting that the Rangers are kind of a one trick pony when it comes to generating offense off the rush. It's a VERY good trick, but it's something you start to anticipate over time. They spread the wings to the walls and break sharply to the crease with speed looking for tips and looking to unsettle the Canes' man to man coverage. As the series has gone along, the Canes are doing a much better job of giving up the stick and getting body position on the cutters. Hard to time the tip chance when you are constantly getting bumped off your line.
