GDT: Canes @ Rangers 5/7 7:00

The Canes look to regroup and steal home ice in Game 2.

Bad special teams play cost the Canes on Sunday. The PP went 0/5 and the PK was 0/2, with a cumulative 23 seconds needed for the Rangers to cash in on both. Andersen also allowed a softie in the 3rd that was the difference. The team practiced at The Rock yesterday and RBA spent a lot of time with PP1. They only had 4 shots total on their 5 power plays and allowed 2 shorthanded shots in the 2nd. And the 5 on 5 play wasn’t great until late either, they only had 8 shots on goal at even strength through 2 periods.

The Rangers got Blake Wheeler back at practice yesterday for the first time since suffering a right leg injury in February. He won’t o,ay tonight and could very well still miss the playoffs, but he gave the team a boost yesterday.

I mean, I guess they could flip him in for Kakko, who hasn't really done a heck of a lot for them in the post season. Not convinced that makes them better though.

Obvious stuff for Carolina ... they need to be better on D-zone draws (which killed the PK before they even got a chance to breathe), tighten up on some of the defensive switches, and Andersen needs to buckle down a notch. Otherwise, In general though, I think they found the pace they want to play against NYR in the 3rd and they should be able to build on that.

Win a faceoff for Pete's sake!
Yeah, it certainly seems weird that Carolina won more total faceoffs in Game 1 than the Rangers did because it didn't feel that way. They certainly lost a significant series of key D-zone faceoffs at really critical times in the game. Again, the devil is in the details. Timing is as important as the bulk numbers in this case.

Everybody's talking about the Canes needing to be better on the kill, but NYR had less than a minute of total power play possession time and ended up with two goals ... because Carolina lost the opening draw of both kill attempts. Win one or both draws and it could have been a different game entirely. Or not, because that's a little too reductive for my tastes.

Yep, the Canes won 53% of the faceoffs. The Rangers had 2 power plays, the Canes lost both draws, Staal and Jarvis losing to Trocheck. That’s how they gave up 2 PP goals in a cumulative 23 seconds. In total in the offensive zone, they were 8/17 for 47%, in the defensive zone they were 7/14 for 50%, in the neutral zone, they were 11/18 for 61%. Staal was 8/10, Drury was 7/9. Aho was destroyed in the circle, he was 5/15 and lost both offensive zone draws on the PP. Aho was 3/8 against Trocheck, 0/4 against Zibanejad. And Kuznetsov took the collar, 0/4.

There's a reason the Rangers don't try to hide Zibanejad from Aho's line ... and that's it. At least when he had Jarvis on his wing, it cut down his faceoffs to just the left side of the zone. In Raleigh, I feel confident predicting that Brindy will assign him to Trocheck's line.

Zibanejad was only good against Aho. He was 0/4 against Staal and 1/3 against Drury.

"Stay out of the box" get's thrown around a lot. That isn't realistic, when you are playing against a skilled team. You are going to take penalties. Really we should always talk about 'don't take undisciplined penalties', which is the category that Kuznetsov's cross check to Fox's face falls into. DeAngelo's penalty to me was pretty darn iffy but you are going to be on the wrong side of iffy calls too.

We are going to be shorthanded. We are supposed to be really really good at killing penalties. And we are, but it we never touch the puck while shorthanded we are in a whole lot of trouble (see win faceoffs in the posts above).

There is no reason why we shouldn't be able to win 5v5 versus the Rangers. There is no reason why our special teams shouldn't be able to be at least even with the Rangers. We failed to execute on special teams in Game 1 and it cost us the game. Break even on special teams and we will beat the Rangers the majority of the times. Win special teams? We are going to win almost all the time.

Better successfully kill the first Rangers PP tonight because the worst thing that can happen is we completely lose confidence in our penalty killing.

Yeah, staying out of the box is over simple and unrealistic. I have no problem with DeAngelo's penalty for example. It was a decent attempt at a legal hit that went just a hair high and looked way worse than it was. You want Tony throwing that hit and every so often a big hit is gonna cross the line. So what? You do NOT want Koozie planting his stick in a guy's mouth. It adds nothing but bad results. Carolina's only other penalties were a consensual roughing on Svech and then a tripping on Svech that looked to me like an accident. That kind of stuff happens. So how do you "stay out of the box?" Like, realistically? You're gonna get 3 or 4 calls against, no matter how things go down.

Anyone who just has to have sound bite advice ... win the first draw when you do take a penalty. That's short and accurate.

Win tonight and suddenly the whole narrative changes back in Carolina’s favor…lose tonight and it will seem like the sky is falling but let’s not forget the Canes won the first two at home two years ago and still lost in seven…at home!

RBA told Gold earlier that Comtois might play tonight but it’s a game time decision. He’s on the ice for warmups, Kuzy is not, so KK probably goes back to 4C with Comtois and Noesen on his wings.

I'm assuming that is both a benching for Kuzy and a response to the Rangers running around trying to end Jarvis' season.

I think this game looks like it could go south quickly. Let's see if we can make a kill.
