The Canes look to stop the bleeding against the surging Slugs.

Since beating the Caps and clinching a playoff spot, the Canes have allowed 10 goals to 2 of the Eastern Conference bottom feeders. Staal and Svech returned to practice yesterday, Carrier skated in a regular jersey as the 13th forward, KK didn’t practice and presumably isn’t on the trip. Svech also moved back onto PP2.

Kochetkov was breaking in new Bauer gear, he’s been a True Temper guy. Maybe it will help, since shutting out the Flyers on March 15, he’s 1-3 with a .804 save %.

The Slugs are following the old Canes script; win games when they don’t matter and kill the draft slot. They’ve won 4 straight and are 7-3 in their last 10 and have escaped the Eastern Conference cellar, albeit by 3 points. Tage Thompson has 43 goals and has a chance at surpassing his career high of 47. Alex Tuch has 33 and they have 7 others with at least 10 goals. Rasmus Dahlin has 47 assists and 4 others have at least 30. While Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen has gotten the bulk of the starts in goal, they’ve been riding James Reimer on their winning streak. He’s won 3 of the 4 and has a 6 game winning streak. UPL beat the Bruins on Sunday. The Slugs can score, 7th in the league in goals per game but they’re 29th in goals against. The PP is 25th, the PK is 23rd.

FanDuel for TV.

Better right the ship soon, because the last couple of games have been Fugly to a point of not wanting to play anything like that come playoff time. Hopefully some of the big boys back will help get the mojo right!

I think the Canes can lock up 2d in the Metro with any type of win plus any type of loss for the Devils against the Bruins (or an OTL for the Canes plus a regulation loss for the Devils).

Conversely, a regulation loss for us lets the Capitals clinch the division. Everyone locked in and the Rangers look like toast, no drama left in the Metro for the last 4-5 regular games other than waiting to see which Atlantic team joins us (hello Habs)

Lines and pairings from the morning skate. Staal and Svech are back, Kochetkov is in goal. After practice RBA said that KK is out at least a week. Reimer goes for the Slugs.

Tonight’s officials:

Referees:
Graedy Hamilton #41, Garret Rank #7

Linesmen:
Scott Cherrey #50, Andrew Smith #51

Hamilton is working his 23rd NHL game, 21st this season. Somehow, the Canes have had him twice so far, both the Canes and Slugs are 1-1 with him. The Canes are 2-0 with Rank, the Slugs 4-3. Rank probably wishes he was in Augusta, he just missed qualifying for the 2012 Masters as US Mid-Amateur runner up. He qualified for the 2018 US Open and won the 2019 Western Amateur.
