GDT: Canes @ Slugs 4/8 7:00

I didn't expect this team to win the remaining games of the season when there isn't much to play for, but I didn't expect us to play so ineptly over the next 3 games, either. It seems we've lost our mojo after the emphatic win against Washington. This can be corrected, but I don't want a repeat of the last couple of years when we limped our way through the remaining games of the season instead of finishing strong.

I about like 70% sure RBA is thinking "we should re-sign Burnsie for another year"
Color me crazy, but I honestly think Burns would be perfectly fine in a third pairing role with less minutes next season at a reduced rate! Pair him with a kid like Morrow and I think he is ok. Let Nikishin take those first pair minutes and partner him with Slavin and I think that makes the most sense. Burns playing first pair minutes against other teams top lines is where you get the mismatches most at the age of 40 when the foot speed is no longer there.

Already under contract for next year are Slavin, Walker, Ghost, Chats. Add to that Morrow and Nikishin. Both Morrow and Burns are RHD so I wouldn't put them together, nor would I put Burns at molasses speed above any of the other 6 unless something really tragic happens to someone's game. Fensore and Smith are both in Chicago as 7th man callups as well. And you have to pay him, and he's making $5.2M this year. Unless he's taking an 80% pay cut there is no chance I'm signing a 40 year old not named Crosby potentially.

Burns should not be out there right now. Let him have a few games out where he can rest his AARP legs in prep for the playoffs.

I keep thinking RBA tearing a page out of Pat Quinn’s playbook— always play the old, aging, seasoned vet over a young guy who could benefit from NHL experience 😔

You have to grant it would take some coconuts to stop the guy's 4th longest-ever NHL GP streak for load management reasons. He is though, in many games this year, the weak link back there, so we'll see what RBA / Gleason / ET think about it...

There is a point where the 'Canes have nothing to play for' clashes with 'you don't want to enter the playoffs on a massive losing streak and completely forget how to win'. We are getting close to the point where a massive losing streak entering the playoffs might be really bad news.

Limping into the playoffs is not often a winning strategy.

He needs 145 more games to pass Kessel. I think it’s a long shot for him to get there, and certainly (hopefully?) not with the Canes. So is RBA giving him the games so maybe he’ll still have a shot to break it elsewhere?
