GDT: Canes v. Avs 2/17 7:30

The boys are back from the bye and kick off a 5 game homestand against the league worst Avs.

If the Canes win, they'll be bucking a trend in the league. Teams are just 3-9-1 coming off their bye. But the Avs may be the perfect opponent; they have the worst record in the league by a stunning 15 points, with 32 points in 55 games, and they played (and lost) in Buffalo last night, 2-0. They average less than 2 goals per game, the only team in the league below 2. They average 3.36 goals against per game, worst in the league. The power play is 29th, penalty kill 25th. Matt Duchene leads with 15 goals, Nathan MacKinnon has 26 assists and 38 points. Calvin Pickard and Semyon Varlamov has pretty evenly split the season in goal. Pickard lost last night, we might see Varlamov tonight.

Tonight not only kicks off a 5 game homestand, it kicks off a furious sprint to the finish. The Canes play their last 29 games over 52 days. They limped into the break on a 2 game losing streak, getting outscored 10-2 in the process. Peters moved the lines around at practice yesterday:

Aho/Staal/Lindholm
McGinn/Rask/Ryan
Skinner/Teravainen/Stempniak
Nordstrom/McClement/Stalberg

We'll see if they stick at the morning skate.

Tonight is the 4th Hurricanes Homegrown game. Aviator will be pouring flights at their stand outside section 337. The food item is the State Fair burger, a bacon cheeseburger between 2 maple glazed donuts, paired with sweet potato fries. If you dare, you can find it at the Fire It Up concession at section 301. Christiane, a local acoustic singer/songwriter will perform at the intermissions.

I think Varlamov was shut down for the year due to injury.
 
Avs looked like a hot mess against the Buffaholes last night. Come on boys, put the hammer down on these guys!

He hasn't played since January 17. Jeremy Smith dressed as the backup last night

Pesce was not at the morning skate. Tennyson skating with Slavin "for now". Dahlbeck is with Hanifin.

Ward off the ice first.
 
CanadaCanes is correct, Varlamov was declared "done for the season" sometime in the last couple of weeks.
 
Pesce will be a game time decision with an illness. If he doesn't go, Tennyson skates with Slavin.
 
Complete silliness in the secondary market for tonight's game. Sec 320 tickets for $32.82 a ticket after fees is the cheapest available? Tickets in that section have a $25 face value and can be bought for $25 at the box office before the game. All of the upper level stubhub tickets listed out there right now have a price way above box office and this game is far from a sellout (plenty of tickets available in all sections). Going to be a lot of upper level tickets still out there on stubhub until the sellers get clued into the fact that there are lots of the same tickets they are offering for purchase at the arena for much less money. Sorry clueless stubhub sellers, but you aren't getting a premium for your tickets, and you are going to have to set your cut of the proceeds to be way under box office to get anything for your tickets tonight.

If the Canes lose this one you won't have to wait to see how the next 7 games go, you can stick a fork in them immediately. Colorado is a TERRIBLE hockey team.

Colorado scores 1-0. After a Power play about as lifeless as the zombies in any number of things.
Skinner scores a very sharp angle goal.

And with that, hockey season for me ends in February. I just can't force myself to watch this crap any more. Stop the ride, I want off.

Can't produce anything against the worst team in the NHL. Avs had a -36 3rd period goal differential.

Amen to that! Consistently awful year in year out. You play the worst team in the league who played the night before, who had lost 5 in a row and you have home ice and you still find a way to lose. That pretty much sums it up with this bunch.
