The Canes welcome the Canucks on $2 hot dog night.

Allowing 3 goals in the first period for the 2nd time this season wasn’t a good start on Tuesday. But Bussi settled into the game, Hall had 2 goals, Aho had his 2nd straight 3 point night and the Canes came out 6–4 winners. They didn’t practice yesterday but will skate this morning, so we’ll have to wait on any lineup changes. Kochetkov should get the start in goal.

The Canucks are kicking off a 6 game road trip. Their next home game will be against the Canes on 10/20. They’re 2-2 on the season, splitting a home and home with Edmonton, beating Calgary then losing to Vegas their last time out on Sunday. They’re 3rd in the league in goals per game, averaging 4.75. Paul Cotter has 4 goals, Marco Rossi has 3. Filip Hronek has 5 assists. Cottter and Elias Pettersson each have 6 points. As good as their offense has been, their defense is bad, 29th in the league, allowing 4.50 goals per game. Kevin Lankinen has started 3 games and was awful in the first 2, allowing 13 goals to Edmonton in the home and home split, with 8 allowed in 28 minutes in the 2nd game. He was better against Vegas allowing 3 in their loss. But he’s at 6.50/.824. Leevi Merilainen relieved him against Edmonton and started against Calgary, allowing 1 goal. He’s at 1.32/.943 on the season.

Red jerseys tonight. Hurricanes Hockey Network for TV.

So, Carolina had a sleepy start to the season, which was expected, and since then they've kind of slowly found their game. There's still stuff to work on, as they have barfed up way too many transition chances and the goaltending has kind of been all over the place thanks to cracks in their shot suppression game. Still, Carolina is on schedule and everything has looked much as you would have predicted.

Vancouver? Yeah, not that. Elias Pettersson (the center) popping off to the hottest start of a career that has been dead in the water for three years? Sure. Everybody saw that coming. Paul Cotter supporting him with 6 points in 4 games? The Paul Cotter who is coming off of a 17 point season in New Jersey? Yup. The Canucks have been all over the place, which I guess is a win for them given just how dire things got in Vancouver over the last few years. Wild games with huge swings and a ton of goals scored by both teams beats the crap out of a steady dose of one and two goal losses.

Could be fun tonight. Vancouver is clearly just throwing caution to the wind and going for it, while Carolina doesn't play that game at all. Can the Canucks tempt the Canes into a track meet or can the Canes strangle the fun out of them? Should be more interesting than your average Canes/Canucks game where you just sit around wondering if the Canes are going to trade for Petey or not.

No changes to the lines or pairings. Kochetkov was in the starter’s crease.

But the big news from practice was that Jarvis was in a regular jersey, the yellow non-contact jersey was gone. He skated with the extras, so he’s not playing tonight. I wonder if the target is Winnipeg next Saturday?

On paper the Canes should maul the Canuckleheads 7-1...but you guys know how these usually go, Canes may take the foot off the gas against the lesser opponent and suddenly it's a 2-2 game half way through the third...I guess that's why they play the game on ice and not paper!

Well, they usually go a lot better than that....Stanley Cup and 90000 wins and all :p

This is about as good a period as you can have. Can’t believe we o ly had 7 shots. We looked dangerous around their net all period long.

I’ve always liked Manny Mahotra. He was one of those lunch pail players that willingly worked on all the teams he played with during his career. I hope he has a good run Vancouver— except against us.
