GDT: Canes v. Canucks

The Canes jump right back into action on what should be a snowy night in Raleighwood.

Last night started poorly, RBA described the first 10 minutes as beer league hockey. But the last 50? Not too shabby. Jordan Staal picked up his 4th career hat trick, the Canes’ first of the season. He joined Jaromir Jagr as the only players in NHL history to record hat tricks at 18 or younger and 36 or older. Jordan Martinook had 3 assists. Svech had another point, building his game back. We should see Tokarski in goal tonight.

Vancouver comes in 4th in the Pacific with 46 points in 40 games. They’re in the 2nd wild card spot, 1 point ahead of Calgary. They’re 2-3-5 in their last 10 and lost to the Caps in OT last night. Jake DeBrusk leads with 17 goals, they have 5 others with at least 10. Quinn Hughes has 37 assists, tops in the league among dmen. Future Hurricane Elias Pettersson has been out since 12/23, he was a game time decision last night but didn’t play. We could see him tonight. In goal, Thatcher Demko was on the shelf until mid-December recovering from a knee injury suffered in the first round of the playoffs. They signed Kevin Lankinen to a 1 year/$875k contract just before camp opened and he’s saved their bacon, he’s at 2.60/.904 in 28 games. He played last night, so we’ll see Demko who is at 3.34/.881 in 7 games. Last night was Demko’s first game back after missing 2 games with back spasms. The Canucks are 17th in goals per game, 23rd in goals against. They’re 14th on the PP, 13th on the PK.

Black jerseys tonight, FanDuel for TV. The weather is supposed to get nasty just before game time, be safe if you’re headed to the game. We’re a game time decision.

I just want to clarify that, as someone that can barely skate and looks enviously at my beer league playing friends, I’m repeating what the coach said. It does not reflect my sentiments. ;)

And what is a Bear League player?
LOL...I won't go there! /editsoriginalpost

This one is interesting…pending sleet/snow starting mid afternoon, will that scare a bunch of the fanbase off. Canes gotta be tired after that effort last night, Canucks rested…Tokarski in, not sure what to expect from this one.

Yea, afraid this one might have to be seen from the comfort of my couch.

Yeah, it's a long old season and there's another game on Sunday. I've been at Canes games when it snows/ices during the game and getting home turns into a crapshoot. Hot pass*.

*pending the weather kicking off in Orange County/Chatham Co. before game time. It's still NC and you still never know with these things, but if the predictions hold as far east as the RTP area then you're usually going to get what the weather nerds say you're going to get.

Probably not as adventurous as a Bare League Player.

Harken back to the 2000 game v the Pens and 20" the next morning.

I'd drive my 67 Chevy p/u to foul weather games. A new dent would hardly have been noticeable! And w/ enough snow in the bed, I didn't want for traction.

Ahh yes, remember it well...wasnt it Canes vs Habs?...walking in not even any precipitation started...first period a sleet/snow mix, second period a full on snowfall...end of the game a full blown blizzard and a hellish drive home and morning time the old yard stick in the front yard with a shade over 20 inches and a multiple day snowed-in event for most.

8,552 was the paid attendance and Marek "The Sheik" Malik with the overtime winner in a 3-2 win over the Habs!!!

I remember it well. As Bill correctly points out below, it was actually against the Habs.

By the time my buddies and I pulled back into our North Raleigh neighborhood after the game, about three inches of snow had fallen, and I remember commenting, "Well, I guess no school or work in the morning." Shortly thereafter, my wife and I turned on the 11PM news and were stunned when Greg Fishel on WRAL said, "I think we badly underestimated this one, folks, and we're now forecasting 6 to 10 inches across the Triangle." We were stunned...having moved here from New Jersey five years earlier, we never thought we should see that much snow again.

Needless to say, when we woke up to 20 inches of snow the next morning, we were shocked!

Still debating on whether or not I go to this one. I always drive our group, but I'm not willing to do so tonight, so my friend has AWD in his Subaru and says he's willing to drive us.

I remember that game... January 24, 2000. I had moved to Wake County (for the first time) in March of 1999, so that was my first winter away from New England.

I drove my then finacee and myself home from the game to our apartment off of Cary Parkway near Preston CC in my trusty Ford Escort, which had seen plenty of significant snow in CT. It took us over 2 hours to complete what was normally a 20 minute trip.

We are definitely going tonight, we will cheer for all of you who are smarter than we are and are staying home.
