The last home game before the State Fair roadie. And Ovechkin’s last regular season game in Raleigh.

The Canes took care of business over the weekend, beating 2 dreadful teams by a combined 9-3. Aho continued his torrid start with 2 goals and an assist. He’s tied for the league lead with 6 goals. Jankowski also had 2 goals, Reilly, Martinook and Carrier each had 2 assists. The team is skating this morning, that’s when we’ll get an update on Staal. If he can’t go, it should be the same lineup as in Chicago with Jankowski between Ehlers and Marty. We should see Bussi in goal.

Tonight is Alex Ovexhkin’s 49th and final regular season appearance in Raleigh. He has 33 goals and 26 assists in the first 48. The only other skater with at least 10 goals since the 2005-06 season is Nik Backstrom with 10. As for this season, the Caps are 3-2, coming off a loss to Seattle on Sunday. Alex Tuch leads with 3 goals, 2 of which he scored on the their first visit on 10/2. Dylan Strome leads with 4 assists. Logan Thompson has started 4 of their 5 games in goal, he’s at 2.78/.902. Charlie Lindgren has started the other, he allowed 2 goals on 29 shots in a loss to Tampa.

Black jerseys tonight, HHN for TV. Note the early start time. Tonight is the Frozen Frenzy, all 32 teams are in action with start times running from 6:00 - 11:00

So ... Washington spent their off season focusing on adding quality forward depth and on paper, it looked really good. Through the early part of the season though, they aren't really getting return on investment. Boone Jenner has the highest point total of their newcomers, and given the expectations for guys like Tuch and Kyrou, that's not good. Also concerning has been the slow start for the two Protas brothers and Ovechkin. It's early days yet, but the Caps have mostly been stuck in neutral. Dubois getting hurt again won't help much, you wouldn't think. They always play well against the Canes though, and they'll be fired up to give Ovi a big sendoff in one of his favorite road barns.

For Carolina, a lot hinges on Staal's availability but injecting Jankowski's mobility into the mix on that line was fun the other night. Admittedly, there wasn't a ton of heavy lifting to be done against a paper thin Chicago team, but still. It would be nice to have the Captain back. Otherwise, the Canes have found their game and now it's a matter of keeping the train moving.

With Staal out, same lineup as Sunday. Kochetkov was in the starters crease.

Carrier - Aho - Svechnikov
Hall - Stankoven - Blake
Ehlers - Jankowski - Martinook
Robinson - Kotkaniemi - Deslauriers
Jarvis

Slavin - Chatfield
Miller - Walker
Gostisbehere - Reilly
Valimaki

PP1: Aho, Blake, Ehlers, and Svechnikov with Gostisbehere
PP2: Hall, Jankowski, and Stankoven, with Miller and Walker

Carbery said that there is too much going on with the forwards and defense so everything is a game time decision. Logan Thompson starts in goal.
