GDT: Canes v. Caps 11/3 5:00

The red hot Canes take on the red hot Caps.

After a thorough and comprehensive dismantling of the Bruins on Thursday, the Canes face the equally hot Caps. RBA rested most of the top 6 late in Thursday, Roslovic slid onto Staal’s line in Jarvis’ spot. There shouldn’t be any changes to the lines or pairs.

The Caps come in winners of 3 straight and 8 of their last 9. They beat the Jackets last night 7-2, taking only 22 shots. They also blocked 32 shots. At least early, their season is more than watching Ovechkin march to the goals record. Connor McMichael leads with 7 goals, Ovechkin and Wilson each have 6, Dylan Strome has 12 assists. Logan Thompson and Charlie Lindgren have split their 10 games in goal. Neither have been great, both have save percentages below .900. Thomson played last night, so we’ll see Lindgren tonight. He’s at 2.62/.882 and hasabsobed the Caps only losses. They’re scoring in bunches, 3rd in the league at 4.40. Even with their lousy save percentage, they’re 7th in goals against, they’re 2nd behind the Canes in shots against. Their PP is awful, 30th at 9.1% and they‘re tied for 8th on the PK.

Black jerseys, FanDuel for TV.

Today’s officials:

Referees:
Dan O’Rourke #9, Ghislain Hebert #22

Linesmen:
Kyle Flemington #55, Steve Barton #59

I’ll renew my annual criticism of Ghislain Hebert still being employed. Barring injury, he’ll pass 1,000 games this year. His first game was March 2009. He’s never worked a playoff game. There are 35 full time NHL officials. Retiring officials don’t get playoff assignments. They named 22 referees and 2 standbys for the 2024 playoffs, so more than 2/3 of the referees were named to work the playoffs. How can a guy so consistently rank in the bottom third of all referees and keep his job year after year?

Almost 1000 games officiated and never given a single playoff game speaks volumes…only in the NHL baby…

The thing about Hebert is that he's not any more obviously awful than a half dozen other guys who HAVE worked playoff games. He's just more consistent. Consistently awful, that is.

Kochetkov has given up 4 goals in the last 2 games. 2 to opposing skaters, 2 to Jaccob Slavin’s leg.
