GDT: Canes v. Caps 4/2 7:00

Wilson was on the verge of doing this stupid shit all night long. And Ovechkin should feel bad for hot dogging after his goal. That was given to him on a silver platter and he knows it but he celebrated anyway.
Wilson was headhunting for sure and Aho was his main target. I wish the Canes had a counter to that clown sometimes to keep that crap in check. He knew exactly what he was doing and he had Gary B in the audience to watch.

Don’t forget the perfectly placed cross check to Burns’ kidney. Right where there is no padding. He’s a professional goon he knows exactly what he’s doing and the league has let him get away with it for a decade

At least it was only one... and it wasn't #895, either. I remember Gretzky playing the Whalers chasing 802 and thinking "not in our house." And then he scored #798 and the Kings won 4-1, but at least the record wasn't broken that night...

Canes clinch a berth!

Front and center last night again was that whiny Canes-hating Ed Olzcyk complaining non-stop about the Chatfield take down but not a whisper about the Wilson filthy cross check on Burns or all the other douche bag moves by the Caps. This guy needs to be called out and dealt with professionally about all the Canes hate he spews because of his little brothers woes from the past. Be a pro Olzcyk and do your job correctly.

This was all on the refs for letting it get out of hand in the first place. It was Obvious from the 1st period that Wilson was looking to stir up and nothing was done. Whoever it was that got ragdolled by Chatty definitely started that one, you could see the very beginnings of it from a replay. FAFO, bitches!

It was McMichael. And it started in the Canes D zone, they were yapping the whole way up the ice.

That was an absolute clown show of a game. Washington's antics were frankly embarrassing given that the league dragged a bunch of people down to honor your hero. Their effort in the first period was pretty embarrassing too. Look, you aren't the only team to have to suck it up on back to back nights. They acted like they were insulted to have to be there, right from the drop. One of the reasons Carberry has been so effective in DC is that he's mostly gotten that team to put their heads down and focus on playing solid system hockey again, but not last night. They were right back to the crap they used to pull under Lavy when they were more interested in winning the bar fight than the game.

McMichael was trying to goad Aho into something from the first period on because Aho chipped him back when Connor McNotDavid tried to get cute after the whistle. Honestly? It's kindergarten playground crap. Wilson is always going to do that stuff, but Washington showed up in a foul mood because they had multiple guys running around acting the fool. Dowd also went full WWF last night, one presumes as a response to getting completely out-played in the first. Same old Caps. When they don't win they act like a bunch of petulant children while Ovi preens.

And yeah, I'm seeing a LOT of complaining about Chatfield, all of which ignores the fact that he was dragged into that confrontation in the first place. Screw that. If McMichael doesn't want to get rag-dolled then he can just stick to playing hockey and leave the rough stuff to people who know what they're doing. Amateur. At one point, Orlov skated over to the Caps bench to talk to Ovechkin in what I assume was an appeal to chill things out, but Ovi wouldn't even look at him. Orlov was PISSED coming back to the bench. I also noticed Slavin trying to talk to Wilson when things started to get really heated. Wilson responded by taking a cheap shot at his head on the next shift. And those guys wear letters on their shirts. Some team have class. The Caps aren't one of them.

Well said JB on all accounts. What kills me about the Craps is that if you are trying to play a different brand of hockey then play it, the bush league antics as soon as they fell behind 3-0 was the prevailing theme all night long...the Caps gave up about 10-12 odd man rushes and their D coverage was just brutally bad all night long. McMichael reminded me of the yappy, little mouthpiece types at a bar that have a ton to say until they get called out and then realize they were writing checks with their mouth that their body cant cash...he seemed shocked that he got rag dolled by a bigger, stronger man.

I mean, McMichael was aiming at Aho and Jarvis ... and ended up with the Motor City hip drop. So no. He didn't get what he was bargaining for, for sure. Again, look at the leadership on that club and it answers any questions you might have. Captain Me First, Second and Third, Assistant Captain Likes to Fight Dirty Guy (Wilson) and Assistant Captain Complains to Nearest Ref At Every Dead Puck (Carlson). Just a bunch of guys who perfectly reflect the character of that team.

Yeah, Brindy said they didn't want to push it and he wasn't feeling great, so they just took Svech out of rotation. I'd guess he aggravated whatever was bothering him previously. As noted above, it WAS a bit rough and tumble out there. So anybody nursing anything was in the wrong game. Good that they sat Staal, honestly. He would have been in the middle of some nastiness and there was no need for that.

One thing occurred to me this afternoon. Washington didn't really push the physical envelope against Carolina in the first two meetings. They played well, despite splitting two games, and were one of the few teams to get Carolina out of their possession game for the majority of those games. And while they've got Wilson. McIlrath and some other salty customers, they've cut down on the real goonery this year a fair amount in general. The way they came out with the after the whistle crap early and often last night tells me that they were testing the waters for a potential playoff matchup. I think Carberry, who is no dummy, was seeing if he could turn the dogs loose a bit and still find that line you need to play their game. For me the answer was no. Carolina got 2 PP markers early and pretty much put that game away by the end of the first.

I know all the narrative kings in the media will be teasing big fireworks in DC on the 10th when they meet again, but I've got a feeling that Carberry saw what he needed to see and that they'll dial it back a notch. And Carolina is not a team to go set the physical tone. They don't back down, but they're a lot more of a play it as it lies kind of team. Personally, I think the Caps are better off doing their normal thing because it works just fine against the Canes. Yeah, you're bigger and more physical but you can apply that advantage in the normal course of business without being idiotic about it.

That's the think that I don't understand. The Caps are a legitimately good team without all of that nonsense and have been winning all season long by playing good fundamental hockey. They don't need the goonery at all in any way. Just go out and beat the other team like you've been doing all season long. Get physical with good hits and when digging for the puck in the corners and in the net front. That's all that is needed.

I mean, it was either a tactic or else Wilson and a couple of other guys just lost their wigs in the first period and let it build up until it exploded into a circus in the 3rd. Wilson took a two hander at Burns' lower back early, and several guys took potshots at Aho and Jarvis early as well. Nic Dowd was trying to get somebody to dance pretty much right from his first shift. Carberry tried to soft shoe it off like it was a normal reaction to stuff the officials weren't seeing, but that's self serving BS. His guys got very physically aggressive, didn't like the push back and escalated. Only somebody who only ever watches the Caps would buy that line of bull.
