A matinee kicks off a back to back.

The schedule monkey somehow wedged a 3 day break into the post-Olympic sprint to the finish. The Canes practiced yesterday and notably Ghost was a full participant. Bussi was in the starter’s crease.

The Devils were expected to compete for the division and the playoffs. That hasn’t worked out. They’re 7th in the Metro, with 78 points in 71 games. They’re on a little run though, 7-3 in their last 10, 5-1 in their last 6 with 3 of the wins coming over playoff teams. Nico Hischier leads with 26 goals, Jesper Brett has 41 assists. Olympic hero Jack Hughes is averaging more than a point per game and has 13 points in their last 6 games. Jakob Markstrom has started 39 games in goal, he’s at 3.07/.884 on the season. He’s backed up by Jake Allen, who is having a good season at 2.68/.908 in 32 games. The Devils have had season long scoring woes, 27th in the league at 2.72 goals per game. But they’re averaging 4.50 in their last 6. They’re 15th in goals against. They’re 13th on the PP and PK.

If Ghost is healthy enough to go full speed, then his return is huge. He’s been VERY good this season when healthy and makes a bit difference in defense utilization on top of his PP impact. Bussi needs a statement game here pretty soon, so this is as good a chance as any. It’s obvious that the staff is looking for a goalie to step up … might as well be you, big dog.

Jersey is getting the classic NHL dead cat bounce. The pressure is off to do anything other than salvage your rep, and their better players have responded. Hughes has been playing like a tiny man possessed since the Olympics, and that’s been enough of a spark for them. The D is still shaky under pressure and a bit short handed, and their scoring depth is still non existent, but they’re dangerous enough.

Should be a good one.
 
Canes seem to like the box...they have installed a revolving door.
They also keep whiffing and flubbing feeds
