The Canes return home for a night in a potential first round preview.
The Canes took care of business on their 3 game roadie, winning in different ways. A shootout win in TO, with the new guy getting the winner and Kochetkov stopping all 3 attempts, including one of his patented poke checks on former teammate Max Domi. A dismantling of the hapless Senators in the other side of Ontario, with Brendan Lemieux kicking the extra point to put a bow on it. Finally, withstanding early pressure from the Islanders, getting 2 goals for Seth Jarvis and a backbreaking PP goal in the dying of the first period, to dispatch the Fishsticks. We’ll see if we get either Drury or Turbo back tonight. Tonight will be Brent Burns’ 831st consecutive game, passing Andrew Cogliano for the 7th longest streak in NHL history. If the goalie rotation holds, we should see Andersen in goal.
The Flyers are holding on to 3rd in the division, with 78 points in 69 games, 3 ahead of the surging Caps who have 1 game in hand. They’re 5-4-1 in their last 10 and are coming off a win over the Leafs, a game that saw Torts scratch team captain Sean Couturier. Travis Konecny leads with 27 goals, Owen Tippett and Joel Farabee also have more than 20. Konecny and Travis Sanheim each have 31 assists. With the absence of Carter Hart, the Flyers have turned to Samuel Ersson and Felix Sandstrom in goal. Ersson has carried most of the load, starting 19 of the 23 games since Hart left. He‘s at 3.16/.883 in those games. Sandstrom has started 2, played in 4 and hasn’t been good, at 4.08/.829. The Flyers are 22nd in goals per game, 16th in goals against. Their PP is bad, DFL at 12.9%. The PK is good, 3rd, just behind the Canes.
