GDT: Canes v. Jackets 4/2 7:00

Penguins lose to Tampa, so the Canes magic number to win the division is whittled to 3.
Slugs lost to Ottawa, so Tampa moved into first in the Atlantic on the tie break over Buffalo. Canes have a 2 point lead on Tampa and Buffalo with a game in hand on the Slugs. Columbus drops out of the Wild Card and falls behind Detroit, Ottawa replaces them at WC 2.

I know many gatekeepers like to tone down the Nikishin love. But he is doing a lot of the same things in the NHL as in the KHL. Great draft pick by us.
He’ll only get better in my opinion. Yes, he was playing in the KHL, but this is a different animal. He’s even said so himself. I’llsee if I can find the quote from a Russian article I read around the break. But he basically said the KHL was a great experience but learning the speed, physicality and over skill level over here has been a real eye opener for him

Things have fallen apart quickly for Columbus. A few weeks ago they were rolling and sitting in 2nd place in the Metro. Canes can do them a solid by beating the Islanders tomorrow, but man, they need to start winning again, and badly.

Oh, he’s nowhere near were he’ll probably get in terms of processing what’s happening at game speed. Nikishin has pushed through the rookie trough where everything gets difficult all at once and is starting to rebuild his confidence, but he’s got 2 or 3 more gears if he keeps working at it.

They were pretty awful last night. I’m not sure what the game plan was, but maybe don’t dust that one off again. Even when they ground out zone time, they never looked all that likely to score … or shoot.

A very dominant performance by the Canes against a team that plays hard but has lost confidence. I could not believe our tenacity in getting to the puck, as our forecheck was at another level. Nikishin's speed with the puck is sometimes making me confuse him with Ehlers. Great home win. Now let's get another tomorrow.

Columbus had 10 shots on goal, only 2 were from forwards, Marchenko and Jenner each had 1. Marchenko only attempted 3 shots, 1 on goal, 1 blocked, 1 missed. Coyle had no attempts.
