GDT: Canes v. Jets 3/2 12:30

I’m disturbed by how completely they broke down after Connor’s goal. If they’re that fragile after their goalie allows a softie, there is more to do than fix the roster. Winnipeg is a good team, no doubt, but to follow up one of the best periods of the season with a period straight out of the 6+ years of Kirk Muller/Bill Peters is concerning.
Worth keeping in mind that Winnipeg is quite good. I doubt they break down after a soft goal like that against Columbus or who ever, but a team like the Jets can really bring the hammer when they get an advantage.

BTW ... RE: big picture stuff

I mean, it's one game and Carolina has been trending up in general since Kochetkov and Martin started giving the team decent goal tending and Roddy found a solid four line mix up front. Most of the changes made in the off season were more geared to post season play anyway, and we're not there yet. So, yeah, I'm not throwing in the towel just yet. Also, for those despairing about the goal tending, I give you two thoughts.

1. For all we know Freddie is going to be able to return and play well. That was the goalie that was supposed to be backstopping this roster and he's played 6 games.

2. For all of his ups and downs, Kochetkov is absolutely as likely to get hot and stay hot for 6-8 weeks as he is to get cold and stay cold. Yeah, he's a wild man but that has its up side too. It's a matter of timing with him as much as anything else. And, again (not trying to be annoying but feeling like I'm being annoying) it's not the post season yet.

it was still a shitshow of a third period.

Well, it wasn't all bad. That little girl who sang the Canadian and U.S. national anthems was spectacular.
Yeah, I thought the Kids' Day stuff was fun. A different mix of mascots was nice for a change. Normally we just get the ones from our region, but they brought in Western Conference furries this time. And Sharkie was running around goading people into chugging their $15 draft beers.

I think it’s appropriate to feel that we have a good team that should make the playoffs. Then we should win a round but based on what we’ve seen I don’t think we have a team that should be expected to make the final or win the cup. Sure if you get in anything could happen. Our goalies could be good enough or they could blow up -same could be said for any other team though. I’m more concerned that again this season that even though we put up good win loss numbers we don’t look like a dominant team and we’re inconsistent. Our top line (or really any line without Jarvis) can be cancelled out by the good teams. Our D is very good but doesn’t seem to quite put it together enough. Giving up 5 goals in a period shouldn’t happen against our D even if the goalie was awful maybe even if we pulled the goalie.

Things could change. We could make a move or two this week. I think we need a 2C that complements Aho. Without that I don’t see us making a deep run unless someone like KK steps way up and he hasn’t shown anything to make me feel that’s likely to happen.

I also think 22 is a weak link in our D. Teams pressure him and hit him to very good effect. That gets worse in the playoffs. I’d be happy to package him for a 2C and solid 4-5 stay at home D.
