GDT: Canes v. Pens 11/7 7:00

So, let's be honest here. The fancy stats match what I watched last night and the Canes got beat by every metric other than the scoreboard. Ned was pretty bad, but Pittsburgh's transition defense was the bigger culprit. They just don't get back in any organized fashion and sometimes don't get back at all. Virtually every rush turns into scramble mode and Carolina is vastly better in transition this season than they've been in the past. Kochetkov was good, but with 2 goals allowed less than expected, it's not like he was Superman. The transition game won that one.

Last night's performance vaulted Koochie into the #13 slot for Goals Saved Above Expected Per 60 out of the 50 goalies that have played in at least five games.

Yeah, he's been more consistent for the most part this season. He was terrible in St Louis and also in that win over Philly, but other than his wild night in Vancouver he's taken the histrionics down a notch and that's been good for his game. I thought he kept it very cool and professional for the most part last night and showed how much he's improved at tracking the puck on crossing passes. A sold, solid effort. He's still bubbling along with a save percentage under .900, but the league average is down this season so he's still slightly above water and an 8 game sample size isn't exactly huge.

FWIW, that's one fancy stat that I'm not sure I trust quite yet. I get the value of the concept of the high danger save number, I'm just unconvinced about the mechanics of making the judgement. It's a relatively new metric, so it'll improve over time and with more data.

Does it? Vegas is playing pretty well, but Colorado and Utah are bumping along at NHL .500 or worse.
Mostly because every time I pull up the NHL stats page it has pictures of McKinnon and Makar. There’s never a good time to play them.

My brother-in-law lives in Colorado Springs and they have been canceling shit left and right since Thursday at noon…they handle snow well out there but this is early for them and came on much bigger than forecasted by all accounts.

My daughter is a nurse in Denver...I'm looking forward to hearing that she got home safely from work this evening.
