GDT: Canes @ Vancouver 10/28 10:00

Aho! Necas and Ghost and Aho - what N OT threat.
I still worry about Necas and Ghost as 2 of the 3 if we don't have the puck... luckily their possession and shift change game has been on point as well. We can be sure either way if those guys are getting big ice time in OT, we won't see many shootouts. #riskreward

Was texting with a buddy from Vancouver who lives in Bali and he made sure to thank Kochetkov for the point. What a bonehead play. He was disappointed for the loss, but has Aho on his fantasy team.

I expected Blake's spin-o-rama chance to go in. Jarvis had some sweet chances too.

Great road trip! Keep it rolling. Oh, and Feel better soon, Freddie.

It's definitely going to be frustrating at times, but I'm mostly happy that we have something exciting to look forward to.

Canes are not going to let Kochetkov run with Freddie out if he is going to play like that. Spencer Martin is going to end up getting some play for sure.
We’ll see how long Freddie is out. The games are spaced pretty well until the 4 games in 6 days with back to backs on 11/16-17 and 11/20-21. I could see Kooch starting against Boston and Washington, Martin against the Flyers next Tuesday, then back to Kooch against the Pens on Thursday.

A little bleary-eyed after a late night and game that was closer than it should have been, thanks to PKs undisciplined play. After a couple of years, we know this is what we're gonna get from him. He can play stellar at times and then he seems to go into sleep mode (or rage mode). Still, I feel a lot better after winning this one in OT and the last 5 out of 6, so I shouldn't be too critical. Lots of good things to say about this team right now.

I would like to see Pyotr draw the line on that kind of play about 5' closer to the goal; he had already stopped a couple breakaways last night and was looking OK. I just had David Ayer PTSD seeing him that far out.

Also, if Blake had scored on the sick spinorama move, that would have been a goal of the year candidate.

For once on this roadie, the Canes actually over-scored their expected goals output. Nice. And thanks to Kochetkov, they freaking needed to do that to get the W. Last game of a long-ish roadie, you grab a 2 goal lead with some opportunistic play and head into the third period looking to just steer the thing to the finish line. You're a possession team playing on the road with zero pressure to entertain anybody. Short shifts, safe decisions with the puck, tie it up along the boards, hold on for draws ... simple, basic stuff. Unless you're playing the "fun" goalie who clearly thinks an adrenaline rush is more important than doing his freaking job. Every time I think they might be fine with Kooch as their primary starter, he pulls out one of these games to remind me just how stupid that would be.

That's the rub with him, his adrenaline rush and poor decision making is the only thing keeping him from reaching that next level of a steady starter...you could see it again early last night that he was just trying to do way too much and found himself out of position countless times. The riverboat gambler antics is just so unnecessary and I'm sure the Canes goalie coaches have been preaching that for awhile now.

Thing is ... I suspect that the pirate in Kochetkov is so deeply embedded in his game that he's not only never going to truly change, but that changing might make him worse. If every fiber of your being is screaming "go lay a flying poke check on that guy" and you have to take a beat to tamp that instinct down, then the puck's probably already past you by the time you process. Goalie is an instinctive, fast twitch position. If the instincts suck at age 25, I'm not sure there's a heck of a lot you can do about it

Since today is a big day in this here household, I had to go to bed after the first period ended and am just now getting around to watching the highlights of the game.

Speaking of goalie brainfarts, Lankinen kept moving to the right even though Aho was moving to Lankinen's left to give Aho a wide open net for the game winning layup. In fact, Lankinen even stops and probably could have had a play on the puck if his next movement was to his left instead of to his right. Maybe Aho is the godfather of the Finnish hockey mafia and Lankinen had to give that goal up lest he ended up with a reindeer's head in his bed that night?
