The Canes make their annual visit to the State of Hockey.

Tuesday saw the Canes shut out for the 4th time this season. They came out with their hair on fire but a couple of posts and an overturned goal took the starch out of them. The PK uncharacteristically surrendered 2 goals, albeit to the best PP in the league. A Wild goal that was waved off but then given accounted for the 3rd goal. Everyone practiced yesterday, so we should have the full complement of forwards. They’re not skating this morning, so we’ll have to wait until RBAs media availability to see what’s what. We should see Andersen in goal tonight.

The Wild are in a bit of a slump, 4-6 in their last 10, losers to the Bruins on Tuesday, their 2nd straight shutout. They’re 3rd in the Central, 3 points behind Dallas, 2 points ahead of the Avs. Kirill Kaprizov is their leading scorer but he’s on LTIR. Among active players, Marco Rossi and Matt Boldy have 18 goals, Rossi has 29 assists. Jacob Lauko is on IR, Jonas Brodin played his first game in a month on Tuesday. And Ryan Hartman is suspended. Filip Gustavsson has started 35 games in goal, he’s at 2.66/.913. Marc-Andre Fleury is the backup, he’s at 2.57/.910 in 19 games. The Wild are 21st in goals per game and 11th in goals against. Their special teams aren’t good, 24th on the PP, 30th on the PK.

ESPN+/Hulu exclusive tonight. We won’t have to listen to John Buccigross butcher Svech’s name all night, he’s in the studio with Parm. Mike Monaco and AJ Mleczko are calling the game.

Yeah, the Wild have been flat out bad for a couple of weeks now. Other than the Flower's triumphant last game in Montreal, even their wins have been scruffy. Brodin and Kaprisov being out haven't helped, and the distraction from Hartman losing his mind probably didn't either. They've just been at loose ends collectively. Makes Carolian's largely health driven struggles seem fairly straightforward. On that score, the Canes actually looked a bit more like a hockey team in Winnipeg on Tuesday so maybe they finally bottomed out on the virus-related stuff.

I'm assuming the Wild will go with Gustavsson tonight. Fluery played the last game and got knocked around, but Gustavsson also got hammered in his last start. Like I said, they've been scruffy. For Carolina, I'd assume this will be an Anderson night, although he looked like he was among the ill in his last start. If he's not healthy maybe Kooch can go try to make amends for whatever nonsense he was on about Tuesday night. So far as I can tell, Morrow is still up with the big club so somebody or another is still a risk to be out of the lineup. Burns and Orlov looked to be feeling better on Tuesday, FWIW.

Wild lines and pairings at their morning skate. That top line torched the Canes for 3 goals of the 4 Wild goals on 1/4 and Rossi had 4 assists. Eriksson Ek had the other goal.

Why do the Wild always seems to get the better of the Canes? I cannot recall any matchup in a long while where the Canes played that well against this team...hopefully they show up and realize that going on any sort of losing streak can see you fall fast in the East these days.

Tonight’s officialsm

Referees:
Ghislain Hebert #22, Trevor Hanson #14

Linesmen:
Travis Gawyletz #67, James Tobias #61

Hebert will hit 1,000 regular season games this season, still no playoff games. Hanson followed the team from Winnipeg, I think he was the guy that waved off the Jets goal for goalie interference.

Changes up front, Morrow sits. Andersen in goal.

Jarvis - Aho - Rantanen
Hall - Kotkaniemi - Blake
Svechnikov - Staal - Martinook
Robinson - Roslovic - Jaaska

Slavin - Burns
Orlov - Chatfield
Gostisbehere - Walker

Orlov should sit a few out to analyze his play…watching and waiting for what on that in no man’s land…
That was sooooo bad. Lost the puck, then when Chatty had to cover for that, coasted around on the wall instead of recovering to get the center where 2 guys are flying in

And a long look to the bench as the opposition is busting in to boot…looked 10 times worse on replay…play the kid over that guy if that’s how he wants to play defense.
