GDT: Canes @ Wild 2/6 7:30

It's hard to fathom that Rans wants to be the highest paid player in the NHL. I don't doubt he's been good in Colorado, but the guy who showed up in NC isn't worth it.

Meanwhile, Marty Necas has 2 G & 1 A for Colorado vs. Calgary in a 4-2 win and earns the #1 Star of the game. Maybe there is something to how good your linemates are or the system? Hmmmmm.

He's obviously frustrated. He missed several opportunities last night. But him being a Western conference guy, my having seen him comes in VERY limited doses. And he has to be better than what he's shown here. But being traded seems to have weighed on him. I'm eager to see what the 14m version plays like.

Rants is not the same without Makar and Nate , no surprise .

He fucked up royally not taking the 8x 11.75 in Colorado . If he hits UFA there is no way I am going close to 13 to match that contract over 7 years .

I know ownership wants a star but he isn’t worth 3 mil more than Aho .

Didn't watch this game and glad I didn't. Our slide to mediocrity has been with us since Thanksgiving and the newbies haven't helped change that trajectory. I'm hopeful that we'll see a course correction in time, but I've also been saying that for a while.

The most frustrating part of all of this is there has been hardly any cricket worth watching to divert my focus onto.

Why are we not talking more about how utterly craptastic the Canes D has been since Thanksgiving?

Let's be honest, Ghost is a scary nightmare in his own zone and he gets beat bad far too much, Orlov does not play anything close to an almost $8 million dollar guy on D and lately his brain farts have been beyond bad. Burns has sadly saw Father Time catching up quickly and this year has probably been the first time his game has really suffered from the lack of foot speed and it has shown in spades. Slavin can only do so much and is asked far too often to cover up his partners mistakes and miscues. Chatfield and Walker have been good for second and third pair slots.

This team under Rod use to always mention their outstanding D play before mentioning anything else but you really cannot say that anymore about this team.

Goals against per game through 11/30 - 2.88 in 24 games
Goals against per game since 12/1 - 2.58 in 31 games
Goals per game through 11/30 - 3.79
Goals per game since 12/1 - 2.77

right now the Canes feel like they're buried in the advanced stats rather than reality - this has been my problem with the PP all year

"Look how good we SHOULD BE!" instead of the reality of "We can't put the puck in the net despite doing all that other stuff right"

The individual pairings seem off...Burns getting as much ice time as he does is not great, Rod's reluctance to that is evident.
Walker buried on a third pair seems strange, he is capable of more than that. Ghost is here to run a pp and be the quarterback...outside of that you're asking for a lot from him. Orlov when he is bad is really bad, but again with a lack of depth on D you get what you get but this team needs another veteran NHL D that can munch minutes if you think you can do anything in the playoffs...with some more depth comes creativity with your pairings.

Burns is aging in front of our eyes. His even strength time on ice has been consistent at about 17:30 per game, 3rd among dmen for the season. Since January 1, Chatfield is playing more than Burns. But Burns plays almost 2 minutes per game on both special teams, so he’s still over 21 minutes per game. Walker is only averaging 30 seconds per game on the PP and PK, it seems to me that he can carry more of the special teams load.

Orlov? He’s like the little girl with the curl, but only the end of it. When he’s bad, he’s horrid. And he’s been bad for more than a little while.

Well the D has not been good and the O has not been good and the Goaltending has been ok at best. Powerplay is embarrassingly abysmal. Penalty Kill has been outstanding unless facing good opposing Powerplay and then we’re ok. Bottom line we look like the team that got bounced from the playoffs the last 2 years. Not sure what the issue is. Coaching?

You guys judging Rantanen/Necas based on a 4-5 game sample are wild.

That said, Carolina needs to snap out of this funk now that they appear to be creeping back to health. The break can't get here soon enough because these dudes need a re-set. Go to the beach or Vegas and clear your heads, guys.

My point was that Necas has a lot more tools to work with in Colorado than Rantanen has here. Numbers don't lie. Mikko also arrived at a bad time, when the Hurricanes were starting to go stagnuts in a lot of departments.

I agree 100% that the break is necessary. Something keeps happening year after year, almost like a script; Carolina gets off to a solid start, then opponents figure out how to stymie the passing lanes and PP, the Hurricanes spend the games bombing shots from outside with marginal effort at crashing the net for rebounds. Outplay, outshoot, pathetic PP, lose by one or two...lather, rinse, repeat...

Am I wrong?

Jim

Numbers don't lie ... over the course of 4 or 5 games? Of course they do. Hell, numbers lie when the sample size is bigger than that, otherwise every guy who had a hot season would be in the Hall of Fame. So, yeah. You might be wrong.
