Western Conference-Leading Ducks Close Out Three-Game Homestand vs. Avalanche
AVALANCHE (33-26-11) at DUCKS (45-20-7)
TV: ALT, FS-W
The Latest: Co-leading the NHL in standings points and wins, the Anaheim Ducks (45-20-7, 97 pts.) conclude a three-game homestand vs. the Colorado Avalanche tonight at Honda Center (7 p.m. PDT, Fox Sports West/AM 830). The Ducks have won three straight games (3-0-0), are 10-4-0 in their last 14 games and have scored 28 third-period goals in those 14 contests (2.0 per game). The Ducks own the second-most wins through 72 games in franchise history, trailing only the 2013-14 club (47-18-7). Anaheim also has the most standings points (46) and wins (21, tied with 2013-14 club) through 35 road games in team history. Anaheim has the top intra-conference record among Western Conference opponents, posting a 31-9-5 mark for a .744 points percentage. The Ducks are 15-3-0 vs. the Central Division, co-leading NHL teams in wins and ranking second in points percentage (.833). The club is also 16-6-5 vs. the Pacific, having won five of its last seven (5-2-0). Following tonight's game, the Ducks will embark on a five-game road trip that opens Sunday, March 22 at the New York Rangers (4:30 p.m. PDT).
Ducks-Avalanche: Anaheim and Colorado meet tonight for the first time since Nov. 2 at Pepsi Center, a 3-2 Ducks win. Tonight's game is the second of a three-game season series, which will wrap up in two weeks on Friday, April 3 at Honda Center (7 p.m. PDT). The Ducks are riding a three-game winning streak vs. the Avalanche dating to March 14, 2014 (3-0-0). Anaheim is 35-30-12 all-time against Colorado and 19-14-5 at home. With 32 points (10g/22a) in 32 games, Ryan Getzlaf leads the Ducks in career scoring vs. Colorado.
Ducks team scope: Anaheim is well on its way to the Pacific Division title, with a 13-point lead on the second-place Vancouver Canucks, but the Ducks are in battles for the top record in the Western Conference as well as for the Presidents' Trophy. Coach Bruce Boudreau opted not to have defenseman Sami Vatanen (leg) rejoin the lineup Wednesday against the Los Angeles Kings, but might bring him back against the speedy Avalanche. Despite his 15-game absence, Vatanen leads Anaheim defensemen with 12 goals and 34 points. It's a big game for the Ducks, who begin a five-game, eight-day road trip Sunday against the New York Rangers and don't return to Honda Center until April 1.
Avalanche team scope: Colorado continues to stay on the periphery of contention for the second wild card into the Stanley Cup Playoffs from the Western Conference. The Avalanche held off the Arizona Coyotes 5-2 on Thursday and are seven points behind the Winnipeg Jets, who are in the final playoff spot. Colorado has won three in a row and is 6-1-0 in March. The Avalanche haven't won four in a row all season. Semyon Varlamov made 28 saves against Arizona, and with Colorado desperate for every point, he's likely to get the call against Anaheim.
