Tonight's Game: The NHL-leading Anaheim Ducks (32-11-6, 70 pts.) open a two-game homestand vs. the Chicago Blackhawks tonight at Honda Center (7 p.m. PST, Prime Ticket/AM 830). The Ducks have won six of the last seven games (6-1-0), eight of their last 10 (8-2-0) and have gone 10-3-1 in the last 14. Anaheim recently became the first NHL team to 70 points this season and earlier posted the most wins coming out of an All-Star break in franchise history (31). Anaheim is 23-1-5 when scoring first this season, one of five NHL teams with only one regulation loss in such situations. The Ducks (16-0-2) also join New Jersey as the only two clubs without a regulation loss when leading after one. With a power-play goal in six of the last eight games, the club is 7-for-22 (31.8%) on the power play and 23-for-26 in penalty kills (88.5%) since Jan. 7. Tonight’s game also wraps up Anaheim’s ninth set of back-to-back games this season. The Ducks are 9-6-2 in back-to-back games, including 5-3-0 in the second game. Dating to the start of the 2013-14 season, Anaheim is 29-11-5 in back-to-back situations and 16-4-2 in the second game, an NHL best by points percentage (.773). Following tonight's game, the Ducks will have three days to prepare for their homestand finale on Tuesday, Feb. 3 vs. Carolina (7 p.m. PST).
Ducks-Blackhawks: Anaheim and Chicago conclude a three-game season series tonight at Honda Center. The Ducks earned a 1-0 victory in the series opener on Oct. 28 at the United Center before dropping a 4-1 decision to the Blackhawks on Nov. 28 at Honda Center. The Ducks own a 44-30-9 all-time record vs. Chicago (23-10-4 mark in Anaheim). Corey Perry leads Anaheim in career scoring vs. Chicago, notching 29 points (13g/16a) in 34 career games.
Ducks team scope: Anaheim coach Bruce Boudreau tried to give starting goaltender Frederik Andersen a night off Thursday when the Ducks visited the San Jose Sharks, but it didn't work out. Andersen had to play the final 23:53 after the Sharks scored five times against Ilya Bryzgalov in the second period of what turned into a 6-3 loss. Andrew Coglianoopened the scoring for the Ducks, but the Sharks ran off six unanswered goals. Andersen, who played well in the loss to the Blackhawks two months ago, will start, Boudreau said. He's won his past seven decisions and is coming off a 4-0 road victory against the Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday.
Blackhawks team scope: Chicago will be happy to see January end. The Blackhawks are 5-6-0 this month and come to Anaheim after a 4-3 road loss to the Los Angeles Kings on Wednesday in which they were unable to hold three one-goal leads and left with a regulation loss after being tied through 40 minutes. "We left some points on the table this month and we have to learn from it, knowing these are hard points to come by," coach Joel Quenneville said after practice Thursday. "You put yourself in that position where you’re doing the right things for 50 or 55 minutes and you come up with air; that’s tough."
