GDT: Eastern Conference Final, Game 5 Canes v. Panthers 5/28 8:00

Despite their dirty players, Florida is awfully good. They (and Tampa) need to be our targets as we retool this summer. Of course, I thought the Rangers had to be our "must beat in the playoffs" target this year.

On D - Does Burns retire, UFA, or take a lot less and play 5-6 minutes (no one seems to mention that, but there's a chemistry element)? Orlov and Chatty were effective. A one year contract for Orlov? Or more likely, he moves on. I suspect we're ready for Boom to take a place, but Morrow is more tenuous.

O side depends on who's available. We need a 2C.

And one good goalie would be nice...

Agree. I'm disappointed by our overall performance in this series, but happy we overachieved from what was anticipated early in the season. Our 1st period showed we can compete at the highest levels, but the 2nd period revealed some glaring weaknesses. We got beat by a better, stronger and more talented team - and strengthening our team in key positions should be a focus for the off-season.

The crowd at the LC was awesome last night. When we tied the score and during the final few minutes it felt like the roof was coming off the building. I hated watching the handshake with FL, but that's a beautiful part of hockey tradition.

Officiating? Basically, it sucks, but especially when you play an opponent like FL - where a penalty could be called on every shift and after every stop in play. The Panthers understand the refs won't make a call on all of them due to the sheer volume of infractions, and they know the NHL will always try to "balance" penalties anyway.

Thanks for a good season and giving us some hope. The Cup is definitely earned and Carolina didn't have the game/personnel to get over the hump this time. There were just too many weaknesses exposed in this round that need to be addressed in the off-season.

Go Oilers, I guess? Never been a Dallas fan, even moreso since the Rantanen signing.

Jim

Big no to Orlov. I'd rather have Burns if the choice is between those two, but most likely both are gone.

On the game and series itself I don't feel much down at all. Tonight they played really well except for that period in the second. I am happy with the season on a whole. Florida is a very good team and they play with an edge I think every Canes fan would appreciate if it was on our team so I can't give them any hate either.

I echo Brindy's sentiments today. He said after the player exodus last summer he had doubts about this team making the playoffs. I think a few of us did. He said he's not disappointed but rather pleased the guys worked hard enough to get this far. Beyond expectation. I think that's the sentiment I need to focus on as well. But I do think Tulski has his hands full. He's got a few forwards he needs to unload or trade for greener pastures. He's got to see if Orlov will stick for us on a 1 year $3.5m deal. Help Burns rent a moving truck. And fleece someone, anyone for a 5th round pick for Kotkaniemi. People keep saying the Canes are lacking a #2 center. I still say they need a #1 center. I believe that now, more than ever.

A 1c is even harder to get

I agree with everything except Orlov. Tulsky should rent him a moving truck too. Maybe he was trying to protect Nikishin and shouldering too much responsibility, maybe he’s just done. But after the way Barkov abused him on the game winner last night, I think it’s more of the latter. Nikishin won’t have the benefit of playing with a guy that plays his position and speaks his language, but I can’t see Orlov sticking around for that big a cut in pay, nor do I see many takers in free agency. Maybe he heads back to Russia, but I think/hope he’s done with the Canes

It always sucks to lose the last game of the season on home ice, but that game was maybe the best of the series. Definitely the most entertaining. Just wild momentum swings and bursts of emotion from both sides. Yeah, the officiating sucked, that's par for Jean Hebert's course, but that game was nuts. The crowd was great too. I assume the fact that the Canes had basically blown the series in Game 1 and2 chased off the chancers, bandwagoners and entitled people but either way the crowd was everything you could ask for.

And look, the better team won last night. That Florida team may be an annoying bunch of rule-ignoring dirtbags but that's one hell of a hockey team. They really should have been dead in the water after the first period, but they doubled down on the pressure on the walls and just choked the Canes of anything remotely resembling clean possession until they snatched the lead. The Canes had beaten that pressure in Game 4 and in the first period either by making an extra pass to change the angle or by throwing up lobs for the forwards to try and chip. But the Panthers started to get even more pressure on the inevitable pass the the half wall, which left the Canes scrambling to skate the puck out WAY too much. That ain't their strength, especially with Walker and Chatty out. They just make it impossible for you to do what you want to do on zone exits, and that leads to all sorts of breakdowns. So hey, congrats where they're due, but I hope the Oilers gut them like a fish.

Let's open a new thread on the Canes retooling and changes needed...I am chomping at the bit to get discussion started on the multitude of work needing to be done this offseason and the fun we can have with spending all that cap space money the Canes have!!! For all the fun we had with almost 9 months of Canes hockey and the success of a Final Four berth, no rest for the wicked in trying to figure out ways to get over the hump.

Done!

BTW, if you think Roddy didn't call Mo out for his little sportsmanship charade after the game last night, then you're dead wrong. That little "it's all about the guys" line is crap and everybody knows it. We know you, Paul and you've always loved having a dirty team. You loved it here in 1999 when you had Gary Roberts and Company out there collecting scalps and you loved it in Winnipeg when you had Schiefele and Trouba out there trying to snuff guys. And you love it now that you have Tkachuk, Ekblad and Bennett going to head on every dead puck. The targeting on Blake during this series was borderline child abuse, and absolutely came with your approval. Eff you, and good on Rod not submitting to your stupid game. You want to take a pass on looking the guys you had your scumbags target for a couple of weeks in the eye, then that's on you. Coward.

100% agree, all the garbage you see Florida do is endorsed by MO and sealed with a kiss, his media charades and all the cute little cliches and quotes is simply an attempt to cover up the obvious filth. The league and their awful officials have given Florida a free pass in the playoffs with that style of play and somehow endorsing the head hit/filthy style as some kind of Gladiator movie sequel and old MO has taken that free pass and ran with it. Not doing the handshake line is a convenient way for MO to certainly not have to deal with the players directly he tried to order the hits on. Hell, he even had no problem taking Stolarz out with a head hit in game one of the second round despite that guy winning a Cup with them last year, that creep knows no shame when it comes to deliberately endorsing his own players to injure guys for a series win.
