The banners were there, but there was never a banner raising ceremony. These weren't a thing for any team back in those days. It's a fairly recent phenomenon. Since the 90's pretty much.

When the 86-87 season began, the defending champion Habs didn't have a banner raising ceremony at their home opener. They did have one at the home opener of the 93-94 season, however.
