That's more a myth, and excuse, than anything
And going from okay to great is one thing. Going for scratch worthy to great is an entire different thing.

First things first though. He needs to have a great second half.

Lafreniere is struggling too since he got a similar extension. I think these kids, and that’s what they still are, need to realize that getting the big contract doesn’t make you great but rather, you got the big extension with the expectation that you will become great.

Fair enough but I recall reading a while back one of the analytics types doing a five year analysis on players using what he called Regularized Adjusted Plus-Minus (RAPM) - a point estimate isolating offensive and defensive impact on expected goals, calculated through a weighted ridge regression taking into account: teammates, opponents, score, zone starts, venue, period, and schedule difficulty.

Over that 5-yr sample: Mark Stone & Draisaitl showing marked improvements from game 42-82, and Quinn Hughes & Gaudreau showing a slowdown relative to games 1-41

Once they secure the bag they can relax of they choose or apply themselves if they choose. Players with pride and a work ethic will apply themselves. Players lacking in character and work ethic will become Michkov's.

Yeah, Gaudreau has REALLY slowed down. He's dead out there.

Too soon?
