That rebuild's going to take a very, very long time.
Like, that's a very, very bad cap situation. This year & next year are going to be a complete wash. That Tom Wilson contract is already the annual candidate for worst contract in hockey.
The only positive is that besides the Wilson contract, they aren't stuck with any long-term anvils. Backstrom, Kuznetsov & Oshie are all coming off the books after the 2024-2025 season.
Washington's main problem, however, is their clear lack of quality prospects. They don't have much on the way.

Lucky for them no one cares, they will be focused entirely on Ovechkin chasing the record for a couple of seasons. In the meantime, they can start purging and trying to refill the cupboard.
