If the Habs are to be deserving of a playoff spot, they should be able to get one without relying on other teams to win or lose on their behalf. If the only way they can get in is for the Leafs to beat some other team for them, then they don't deserve to be there.

Uhhh, no.

The 86 and 93 Habs made the playoffs on their own merit. They didn't need to root for Team A to beat Team B in order to qualify.

In 86 they finished 2nd in the Adams and 7th overall in the league. In 93 they finished 3rd in the Adams and 6th overall. They weren't sweating it out on the last day of the season hoping that a certain team would lose to another so they could get the last wildcard spot.
