GDT | Game #79 | vs Lightning | Thursday, April 9th 2026 7:00 PM EST

It was a different time
Yup - in many ways… hockey players predominately came from middle / working class upbringing… that’s why scouts loved the Sutter’s, Hunter’s - hardworking farm boys tough as nails.

Players now come predominately from upper socioeconomic demographic very high end skill capable but vast majority don’t like any rough & tumble stuff, see it in their play - Matthews, Zegras, Hughes bros etc all lose their cool when targeted and lose some of their effectiveness

He was a tough as nails western Canadian boy from from Moose Jaw. Slaf's parents were elite Slovak athletes. Different upbringing.
Clark Gillies daughter is married to Bob Bourne’s son Justin who is a host on Sportsnet in Toronto.

My first great hockey moment not Habs related is Nystrom’s OT goal in game 6 of the 1980 finals. It looked offside but whatever

I am prolly wrong though, a tit fucker like me.

I did not know that Justin was his son.

Yeah....when's the last time a player came from a place like Thurso, QC? Feels like half the league now hails from Toronto and surrounding burbs.
