GDT: Habs @ New and Improved Leafs

But daddy, I want him to play better. I want him to be the greatest Leaf of all time.

Offensively he is light years better than Keon. But factor in Keon’s defense compared to Mathews and it isn’t eve close. Keon was stellar on both side of the puck and Mathews is lagging defensively.
Different eras, different coaching styles. Nowadays they protect their elite players, back then they made them change the bus tires too. Again, not his fault.

How many of the top ten scorers are sent out on D in today's game?

I don’t see Matty lagging defensively. He’s one of the best.

One thing about keons numbers - couldn’t have been helped by playing his best years under imlach

big m had 4 30 goal seasons in 11 years as a leaf. Left the team at 30, played 6 more seasons and topped 30 goals in all of them

I definitely think the late 70’s Leafs would have been better with Keon as the #2 centre.

we might’ve won one playoff game against Montreal.

Marner? 18th place. Crosby? 13th.
Not quite top 10 but..

show your work

This game people play with Matthews is funny. Oh, he's not good in the playoffs...well what I really meant was that he wasn't good in these specific games of the playoffs....oh, what I really really meant was that he wasn't good in the situations where the team lost.

Just admit that you're hanging team failures on the guy who has been it's best player in those playoffs for not dragging a bag of passengers kicking and screaming to where he's trying to go.

Dude has a spotty playoff track record of course, but it's not remotely what his naysayers try to show. In 6 trips now the only times he's been anything else but a top player in the series, he got dad dicked by prime Bergeron when he was 20 and sucked against Montreal, I won't defend that, it was shit. The other 4 trips he was Auston Matthews in.

Sucking vs Montreal is the mind boggling one.

No shame in losing by a whisker to a team like Tampa last season or the Bruins years ago

As much heat as he takes for the Columbus series, he led the series in scoring and was a +1 in 25 minutes a game. Matthews-Nylander-Tavares scored 6 goals, the rest of the team scored 4 with 2 of those from defencemen and another from an emergency call up rookie.

But yeah, the Montreal series was just terrible. I have no idea wtf happened.

Is it really mind boggling though?

Danault was brilliant those playoffs.

Matthews should have found a way. That’s what the greats do.
I know but all the greats had that guy that knew how to shut them down. Danault did see Matthews quite a bit over the years to learn. Just saying it's unfair to both players to underestimate the effect Danault had.

Yeah, I’m not denying Dano any credit, and it wasn’t just Dano, btw.

Still, Matthews has to find a way

I am only judging his past performance, specifically vs Habs. He’s a great player

I never focus any criticism solely on Matty. Marner, Nylander, and Tavares have much to account for in elimination games, just like Matty does.

Focusing on the only 4 guys on the team (minus Mo, who is usually a playoff gangster) with any history of doing anything in those games is silly.

More players doing more things is the answer, not the only guys doing anything doing more.

Your best players have to be your best players, and better than the opposition’s best players when the season is on the line. If they’re not, generally you will lose. And we have.

Our best players have been our best players and better than opposition best players....and we've still lost.

Maybe it's more complicated than that and depth matters? How many times do we need to get beat by 4th liners before you clue in?
