Well, atleast Philadelphia is a city that is kind to their underperforming, high paid athletes though, so everything should turn out just fine for Mason...right?
 
As bad as Mason is, they've made far worse decisions as an organization. The contract isn't as crippling as Clarkson's contract, for example. Fairly short term and really not that pricy. Probably about 1-2 mil overpaid at the worst.

Are you seriously trying to compare the shambolic contract of a third-liner to a terrible contract for an incredibly below-average starting goaltender?

At least Clarkson won't be losing games for us on his own. Positionally-speaking, Mason's contract is arguably far worse, insofar as the potential for negative impact it has on the Flyers directly.
 
making a bad commitment to a bad starting goalie might be the most crippling move you can possibly make, actually.

If Mason is as bad as you say, they'll simply find someone else. Clarkson is getting paid over 5 million for the next 7 years. He's arleady way overpaid and arguably a 4th liner right now. Can you imagine what it's going to be like in year 5?
 
It's not really a commitment though. There are plenty of young cheap goalies available for relatively cheap every year. Flyers shouldn't and won't be comfortable with just Mason heading into enxt year if he continues to shit the bed. They'll supplement him with another cheap goalie with upside. Plus, 3 years is hardly a commitment.
 
He got about the same as Pavelec got in a much different market (Pavelec would have probably got closer to 4.5 or 5 in todays market). Similar numbers over the past few years. Unfortunately, that's how much goalies of that caliber cost.
 
two things:

1) after that kind of committment, they will now go the extra mile to prove it was right, even if it's costing the team wins.
2) $4m for a bad backup goalie is worse than $5 mil for a decent 3rd liner.

and pavelec has been killing that team, because they refuse to admit that they made a mistake and/or can't afford to just eat his contract.

This is worse than the Clarkson contract. It basically hems them into using one of the worst starters in the league, as their starter. It more or less ensures that they're going to receive sub par goaltending for the life of his contract, or at least the first few years until they truly realize their mistake.

Clarkson's contract just means that we have an overpaid, but useful 3rd liner kicking around for the next 4-5 years until we buy him out. Clarkson will never drag down the performance of the team in such a way that it causes them to miss the playoffs, whereas a starting goalie absolutely can do that.

They have shown little to no ability to do as you suggest here.
 
Well, the thing is, the Leafs have looked a hell of a lot better with Clarkson out of the lineup than they have with him in. Calling him a decent 3rd liner is a bit of a stretch IMO.

The Flyers won't be afraid to make moves if Mason doesn't work out. He played at about a .925 over his first 40 games or so with the team.. he may be dropping now but maybe they believe he will level out at .910-.915. And if not, who cares.. it's 3 years and only 4 million. Either find a cheap goalie to complement him or buy him out. With the Clarkson thing, the Leafs are ****ed whether they keep him or buy him out.
 
No, you're just wrong.

There is no way for you to make a bad contract to a starting goaltender somehow less important or impactful than one to a 3rd line forward. There just isn't.

I tend to agree, although they started playing better before he got injured. The improved play is largely the result of bumping McSelke down and Holland up, plus replacing Fraser/Ranger with Gleason.

Don't forget the first ten games of the season. We're likely playing at a 100+ point pace without him in the lineup. And he makes 5+ million over the next 7 years.
