GDT - Leafs @ Caps, HNIC, Nov 25

There is certainly room for improvement but I think we also under-estimate the process of building a young team and getting them to play consistent solid hockey shift after shift, game after game. Look at other young teams like Edmonton, Carolina, Phoenix, Winnipeg ... etc.

Anyways, we'd better be ready to start on time tonight, or else the Caps can hand us our ass tonight. We've played a few 'bad' games in a row now but have managed to pickup points that we don't necessarily deserve. I've got a feeling a spanking is in order. Hope I'm wrong.

Yeah seems like a top 10-12ish team. Not quite in the elite elite but just a year ago they were pretty much an average bubble team. So far it looks like they have taken a step if anything. Have to be better than recent play but once Willy gets going they can be even better than top 10-12.

I think the heat charts are skewed towards the team dominating 10-15 minute stretches after already playing 45 minutes of bad hockey.

Wait, what? So you think the heat chart skews towards the team carrying play for 15 minutes, and not towards the team apparently carrying play for the rest of the game?

That's is counter intuitive to say the least.

That has been the usual pattern in our games. Hard to keep playing 15 minutes of good hockey a night and be successful.

That's where I'm disagreeing. We're flat out dominant for 10-15 minutes and then mostly even for the rest of the game with some short stretches of dominance from the opposition.

And I do put value in pick possession and zone time. It tires out your team and makes it much more likely that the opposing team gets a good scoring chance and/or draws a penalty.

But why are you bothering with putting value in a fault analogue ("zone time") and not just looking at the actual product itself (HDCF/HDCA). Sure, zone time can be indicative of HDCF/HDCA but if zone time doesn't turn into those, who cares?

That's fair game for me with regards to evaluating team performance. Once Anderson stops playing at a .950 rate like he has over the past few weeks, we will see more people pay attention to this kind of excessive defensive zone time.

How about a few weeks ago when we were playing at the same pace and Freddy was rocking a .890?

And I think you are off base with re: to the Habs game. The first period was even but we dominated the rest of the way.

The Habs out chanced us 13-10 (5-4 in HD) in the 2nd and also had a slight corsi edge. We didn't dominate the 2nd at all. We scored 2 goals, but were out chanced.

**** me, he's put Marner back with Bozak. That's just mean. No one should have to play with this dog-****ing tool, let alone our best young forwards.

Ron Hainsey most calming presence on the blueline. Atrocious. I'm glad the Leafs are a "strong possession team" because that's where their defense comes from, holding onto the puck. Once the team gets hemmed into their own zone it's all Freddy because there's really no Leaf D that calms the nerves. It's Freddy or nothing in those situations. And Freddy has holes.

Polak may not even be good enough for the Marlies tbh. If there is one complaint I have about Babs, it's his love for poley. It won't last though. Babs eventually figures everything out.

He really, really wants a RH net clearing presence that he trusts on the PK so he doesn't have to ride Zaitsev so hard. He will give Polak every opportunity to get back into his 2nd half form from last year, but yeah I agree, if Polak isn't in that form Babcock won't play him.

Watching Auston and Mitch play with a bit of a mean streak the last 2 shifts has me at half mast.

it's like the team and the goalie can never be good at the same time.

dominant start by the leafs then bam.

Honestly, I'm not even mad there. It was Ovy, it was a well placed missile. Would I prefer that all 35-40 foot wrist shots are stopped...yeah, but not all shooters are created equal.
