GDT - Leafs vs Ward & Canes | 7:00PM SNET

I mean i know he has a jewcrush but how long can babs let matthews work his ass off like that and still keep him chained to hyman?

And yet, despite those possession numbers, who do we send over the boards when we're down a man?

Smith, Martin, Polak & Hunwick.

I think someone needs to show Babcock some old video of Pat Quinn putting Sundin, Mogilny & Kaberle out there to kill penalties.

It sure does seem like Babs ignores these possession stats. It's not just Hunlak but especially Smith, who is a corsi tire fire replacing a guy who was decent possession-wise.

I haven't checked recently, but I suspect the Leafs possession stats have hit the tank, particularly since Smith and Hunwick were inserted in the lineup.

A nightly headscratcher. Hyman is a good player but out of his depth with Matthews and Willy. He kills way too many chances.

What I want to see is Soshnikov in Hyman's place.

He doesn't have the same size, but he's got way more skill and is just as tenacious after the puck.

VanRyk - Matthews - Marner
Komarov - Nylander - Kapanen
Leipsic - Kadri - Brown
Martin - Holland - Hyman

Score Adjusted ES

Rielly-Zaitsev: ~18:40, ~48.4cf%
Gardiner-Carrick: ~18:25, ~46.7cf%
Hunwick-Polak: ~14:30, ~34.4cf%

not a great night for the top 4, but again disastrous for the shitduo.

God one game samples for corsi are ****ing beautiful. Thanks for posting them zeke. They add a tremendous amount of insight and almost always confirm what we see on the ice.

How may games did it take you to decide Marner was exceptionally average in all areas?

It's time to swap out the Jew from Matthews' line and also make some changes to the bottom half of the lineup. We've seen enough in both cases that it simply isn't working.

We've got some organizational depth, it's time to use it. I feel like Sosh needs to be given more time and Kapanen should get a shot here at some point.

The Hyman thing has got to stop. It's like I'm watching a movie filmed in blue and white called Babcock's List every game. For ****'s sake the guy can neither receive nor make a pass. enough already. I could give a **** how gritty or hardworking he is. He can go do that on a 3rd or 4th line.

When are we going to put Matthews and Marner together? back to back games scoring only 1 goal, why not shake things up for a game or two and see what happens? Maybe one goes in off AM's rear end and he goes on a tear. poor kid has fallen into a hole full of rattlers.

you can harp on hyman if you wnat but that line got plenty of chances tonight.

the leafs struggled with the canes speed and tenacity. they couldn't carry the puck trhough the neutral zone and the carolina playrs did a great job of closing gaps at the lines to cut off shoot ins. t

the only two guys who were winning pucks all night were matthews and hyman.

the kadri line couldn't keep up and the bozak line wasn't strong enough on their sticks.

anyways, carolina's really buzzing right now. the leafs got stymied by a great goaltender on saturday and a hot well coached team tonight. no point in panicking.

The hunwick and polak shifts made me cringe every time last night. Even Polak yelled out "what are you doing" when circling behind the net and Hunny gave up the puck for no reason at all. Shambolic. And the shorty from Stalberg? Gah. Deflating. The speed on both teams was nice to watch though. Almost grabbed a New Jersey, but superstitious me wouldn't allow it after a loss. Still up in the air. The Classic jerseys that were just revealed are slick in person. I do like the 100 year jerseys though. They just seem to be missing something on the shoulders. I also was back and frothing between nylander, Matthews and Marner. Pretty sure I'll be going with the Canadian kid. He's just so fun to watch. Such a slippery little guy too.

Right ... and we lost both games 2-1 too so it's not like we were completely outplayed.

HOWEVER, it is time for some much needed adjustment imo.

I can never understand the Babslove for Hunwick and Polak but at the very least, can we rotate the bottom unit with Marincin and Corrado? In the absolute worst case, those 2 are no worse than Hunwick and Polak in pretty much every area of the game, and right now they're just rusting in the pressbox. We should at the very least try to keep them fresh.

I am also sick of seeing Hyman killing chances on the Matthews line. Yes, the line is getting chances, despite we're playing handicapped with Hyman on the line. And yes, I get why coaches appreciate Hyman's work ethics, but enough is enough when it's clear his skill and his creativity don't belong on a line with Nylander and Matthews. Sosh, Brown would both be good replacement for Hyman. Hyman himself would actually look BETTER in a 4th line role too.

And finally, I'm just about fed up with Smith and how even in his very limited minutes, he manges to bring down the team's possession. The 4th line's possession was pretty good with Holland and you can say all you want about Smith is a PKer, but he's a pretty crappy PKer. Let's put Holland back there.

To me the fact that everyone's complaints are about 4th line/bottom pair and a 3rd line winger is a great sign that the organization is on the right path.

I'm pretty certain no one in the organization sees any of Smith, Hunwick or Polak as long term solutions here. I guess the problem is no one sees Holland, Marincin or Corrado as long term solutions either. The depth isn't there yet, but you just have to take a look at the Marlies to see that it is coming. By the end of the year you have to think guys like Valiev, Nielsen, Dermott, Loov, Leipsic and Kapanen will all get some time.

I remember Mr. Chance playing few years back also known as Jason Blake

I mean come on - Hyman is scoring at a 10pt pace, with top scoring minutes.

That's just not good enough. That's not even good enough for 4th line minutes.

The problem there, imo, is there's solid evidence that the former trio is very bad even in depth roles, while there's good evidence that the latter three are at least good in depth roles.

How big of a problem is that really?

I don't know about evidence that they are good. Evidence that they are better maybe.

Marincin and Holland got the first shots this year and lost their opportunities.

Whichever of the 3 they use the Leafs depth will need to improve.
