GDT: Penguins @ Leafs - The Return

Babcock is the best.

Mark Masters ‏
Babcock: "You don’t have to blame any players, right here, buck stops here. I’m responsible. Period. I’ll get it looked after."

Babcock: "I’m disappointed in myself. I’m the coach. I’m supposed to be in charge & be steady on the rudder & give them guidance."

Thats a pretty big upgrade from the last couple of guys throwing everyone under the bus.

Yep. Mike knows this will be a long haul and he needs to adjust his methods as well. We'll get a top five this seaon, but I am a little...uneasy at seeing Columbus and Anaheim so close to us. Lost a four pointer to CLB already.
The possession increases have been sweet though, we're around 51-52% a fair amount of time.

I think I've spent as much total time watching Babcock interviews this year, as I have watching this trash team on the ice. The man is an outstanding communicator. He's going to be a huge asset when we get good, and a huge reason we get good.

This is crazy.

Bernier is seriously the shittiest goalie ever. He should give the money back. Why are they even playing this guy? Constant backbreaking, soul-killing goals allowed.

I wish we'd pulled this tank job last year to get McDavid. Not sure if whoever we end up with this year, when there's more of a chance of being bumped down, will be worth this worthless season.

I am concerned that finishing last certainly doesn't guarantee us Matthews as well.

We obviously won't know until June, but that would be our luck for sure.

Chychrun is also a hell of a prospect. A small step down from Ekblad, in the "Doughty" level of defensive prospects imo.

What sucks is that it's looking like aside from our first, there may not be too much more high draft picking for us.

These pending UFAs we brought on aren't looking like they will get us anything so far. Bozak is further cementing his untradeable status. Though Phaneuf and Lupul might just attract a taker if they keep this up.

We gotta get one more first rounder to go along with the two we already have.

You'll still get firsts for Phaneuf and JVR. You won't get a first for Lupul.

I don't think we're trading JVR. Hope not, at least.

If Lupul has potted 20 goals by the deadline and stayed healthy, there's no reason why he wouldn't bring in a first.

Phaneuf with those five long years left after this one...it'll be a very limited market for him.

Even if he pots 20 he has too much history of injury to net a first. I'd be shocked if Lupul got you guys a first.

I'm not convinced bozak is untradeable. JVR is the big judgement call. He's by far our best chip, and I think you have to consider offers.

We're really likely to have 3 of the top 32/33 picks in the draft as is and short of trading a piece like JVR, Kadri, or Gardiner, were unlikely to score another 1st this year imo. It's cool though, Hunter is going to trade down from the Pittsburgh pick anyway, for a later 1st and a 3rd, then trade the late first for an early 2nd and another 3rd....then trade the early 2nd for a mid 2nd and another 3rd or 4th....

Moar picks!!!!

we can't look at picking high as the sole hope for success anymore.

first off we have Hunter and the revamped scouting staff (along with an apparent reversal in dinosaur drafting policy, if year 1 is any indication) to look towards in terms of increasing our success rate with mid and late picks. and second, if the team starts on an upward track after this year, our drafting position will degrade naturally. if Hunter and our scouts live up to Shanahan's faith in them we're going to start seeing core players or even stars added to the team from outside the first round. our rivals seem able to do this and there's no reason this team can't have the best scouting in the league with the resources at their disposal.

It's amazing. Babcock's forewarning that there would be pain means I experience zero emotion when this team loses now. It's like some kind of fanesthetic.

Lupul you trade for a 2nd; if he got a 1st its because Lou went full Scarface

We're not getting a 2nd for Lupul unless we take back a worse contract in return. Just moving him off the books is all we can ask at this point. Though I could easily see him getting crucified at some point and sent to the AHL to send a message to the rest of the organization. Babcock can't be happy with his level of play.

nobody is trading for lupul.

not helping things: he is earning a real salary of $6.75m this year.

more stupidity from burke's boys - they gave lupul a mid-loaded deal. he was in the $3 range in years 1 and 2, $6.75 this year. 5.25 (his cap hit) next year. maybe they can trade him at $3.75 in year 5 of 5... assuming his perforamnce doesn't slip from where it is now (unlikely).

we're pretty much in clarkson territory here, folks.
