GDT: Round 1, Game 5 Canes v. Devils 4/29 7:30

The Hurricanes DNA with NJD is strong- Haula, Doumalin (via draft), Noesen, Pesce, Hamilton.

Of all of those, Noesen and Pesce are players I’d have back. They’re beasts! Hamilton wilted again, Haula is a head case and Dumalin good, but limited.

Pesce played his heart out, Markstrom did just about everything humanly possible in the third and fourth periods to keep his team in it and is a gamer! No team wants to see their D that depleted by injuries in the playoffs and that played a key role as the series wore on. A day later I’m still amazed how dominant the Canes played in that third period and most of the entire overtime to simply control the play and give up next to nothing overall. I’m exhausted from that game and pulling into the house at 1230 last night had me up half the night thinking about it!!!

It’s interesting how different the 2OTs last night were from the 2OTs previously in this series. Night and day. Complete role reversal. I’m gonna chalk that up to home ice, coaching and leadership, experience, and the Canes just wearing the depleted Devils down over the course of 10 days.

Really the overtimes were an extension of the 3rd period. The Canes outshot the Devils 15-8 in the 3rd and then held them to 3 shots in the first OT, 2 of which came in the last minute.

What a bonkers game. You sometimes get those in the playoffs, especially when a team really, really doesn't want to go home. And credit to the Devs for fighting for their lives like that. It would have been easy for them to pack it in at several points last night but they hung in and extended as long as they could. In the end, they just didn't have the depth to keep it up under a massive onslaught from the Canes. The OTs were freaking brutal with only Markstrom standing between them and painful exit interviews.

And hey, if ever there was a case study on goaltenders needing to find their legs in the course of the game, it was Game 5. Both Kooch and Markstrom had just horrific stretches, and they both came back from them and figure out how to keep their teams in the fight. Tremendous recoveries by both guys. I still wouldn't trust Kooch to get my mail, but hey ... wins are wins. Take 'em and smile.

Moving forward, it's good for the Canes to have found out that Blake is a tiny playoff warrior, that Ghost can bring it when it matters most and that they CAN produce on the power play even against a terrific PK like New Jersey's. Good to finally get Grade A Svech too. What a huge difference it makes when that guy is playing as well as he can.

Speaking of PPs, am I correct that the Canes outscored the Devils 1-0 while the Devils were on the PP? Special teams was unbelievably lopsided. Even strength was probably pretty even goal-wise.

I still don't have much confidence in Kooch and was nervous as hell every time a shot was fired at him. But it is what it is - and I hope those demons between his ears vanished with those devils on the ice, as we prepare for Round 2.

What an epic come back. I thought of going back to bed after the first period but boy am I glad I didn,t.
Our last elimination game ended with a pretty epic collapse. This one had an epic comeback. Maybe next time we just get a lead and stick with it? Just a suggestion. Of course, what would be playoffy about that?

Technically, yes ... although Noesen's goal last night may as well have been a power play goal. It came three seconds after Robinson's penalty had expired and I don't think Robinson even had a chance to get into the D zone before Nemec shot the puck that Noesen tipped in. Both teams had one like that. Hall's 3 inch cleanup shot was like 4 seconds after Glass' penalty expired. Fitting for a wild, wild night

The one thing I really remember fondly about last season's playoff was that epic comeback against the Isles in Game 2 of that series. The one where the Canes scored the game winner immediately off the faceoff following the tying goal. That was a comeback from a 3-0 hole as well, IIRC. Comebacks are more fun than those detached professional games where you nurse a 2 goal lead.

Also ... for the record ... I have been using earplugs this season since my ears ain't what they used to be. It was pure white noise at times last night, especially in the 2nd when the Canes were on that 3 goal run. Just earth moving noise.
