GDT THU JAN 9 - Canes/Leafs v. Canes/Leafs

This was maybe the worst game I've ever seen this team play since Wilson left, and these past 6 weeks of hockey is probably the worst stretch of hockey this team has played since Toskala left. And that is VERY bad. Think about this - if not for having 2 good goalies in Reimer and Bernier this season, we'd be a sure bet for 1st overall pick at this point. This is how BAD our season's been.

I remember early December I was saying this team needs some drastic changes to turnaround. I was told nope, the team would ride it out ... yeah, we sure did ride it out.

What's the most puzzling is Carlyle, who through most of his years in Anaheim, actually had a pretty good record and was a pretty good coach, has made some of the stupidest decisions in his career this season. And tonight tops them all ...

- Why did he think Gleason, who couldn't even crack the Canes' top 6, could play on our top unit with Phaneuf??
- Why did he think of all the young defensemen, it was Gardiner who should sit, while Franson - the worst of them all, gets a free pass night after night after night?
- Why did he think Fraser, looking so bad the last time he played, can get into the lineup when our D is already having all kinds of problems moving the puck?
- Why do we still struggle with basic breakout from our zone after 50 games? Shift after shift you can tell EVERY TEAM just dump the puck in, forecheck on our D and come out with scoring chances. Is it because our D can't move the puck all of a sudden? No, it's because they have nobody to pass to. Our forwards are never in position to receive and outlet pass. This cannot happen at this point in the season.

It was just a total crap game from beginning till the end. I feel so bad for our goalies. Reimer did NOT have a good game tonight, especially struggle with rebounds, which is not all that surprising considering he's been sitting on the bench for so long. But he did make so big saves to keep us within 2 goals. We could EASILY be down 4-0 after just 10 minutes. How game after game we come out SO unprepared to start the game?

I said we needed drastic measures to turn this team around in December and I was called a drama queen. We desperately need drastic changes if we want to see playoff hockey in this town this spring.

Well you would have been called that by me. The writing has been on the wall for this team for a while. It has been clear as day to see.

Add me in that same group. I was called hftard, fairweather fan etc etc as well.

teams never learn they keep paying like drunken sailors to third liners then a year later he is on the trading blck at the deadline

maybe one day all GM`s wake up

Nonnis is in a tough situation to make deals in desperation

problem is your players you have on the cheap right now are the ones they want in deals like Kadri , Bernier , Reilly , Raymond , Bolland

and the overpaid like Clarkson will only fetch the same overpaid my headache for yours

he has to move JVR or Phil , Or Dion or Lupul if you want anything meaningful in return , gutsy call for Nonnis

English version?

simple english my friend , Clarkson, Gionta , Wideman , Leino , Hudler and add another 100 or so over the last 5 years

its these slightly better than average support guys making too much money as UFA , they dont make their team better , they cant live up to their contracts , GM gets frustrated and he is available at the trade deadline every year after GM realizes wrong player for the wrong team at the wrong time

its funny when you as an owner get burned 9.5/10 with these idiotic signings ( all GM`s are to blame ) when do you stop this nonsense in the summer

I don't know. Little steps. How hard can it be at this point to say, ok guys...no more dump and chase. Just to see what happens.

Kessel has really been pissing me off the last couple of games. He's gone back to that perimeter player that just completely shies away from any sort of battle for the puck. They need this guy to be a leader on the ice. He's at his best when he is battling for the puck and going to the net. He's been playing soft as shit lately though.

Same for Lupul. He's at his best when he is playing a little reckless. Those guys need to step up their games and be the leaders they are supposed to be/paid to be.

Phaneuf even looks extra lazy on many plays. When your captain and leaders play with no passion, the whole team feeds off of it. And we dont have guys like Komarov and Grabo being energizer bunnies either.

Yup, our best players need to be better. Nobody seems to want to walk about it, but Kessel's production has slipped recently. Despite his buddy Bozie being back.

Is that from Carlyle killing the "rush" aspect of this team? We can't break out with any speed, and the D are left with long bomb stretch passes to the other blue line. How many times do we see them fire the puck up the ice because there's no puck support to break out of the zone.

This is by far the biggest problem with this team right now. Our spacing, especially on the breakout is shambolic. There are flashes of short quick passes, but for the most part it's hit and hope type stuff.

I would add in "board play". We are losing most battles on the ice. Dmen pitch on our forwards and win, when we dump and chase we aren't winning battles and when they are dumping they come up with pucks. On top of it, most of our centres have been getting their ass kicked on faceoffs this season.

THere is no doube that we simply don't look like a fast team anymore. We cannot breakout with speed at all.

Yeah, the three posts above sum things up nicely. I don't know if that's a 'systems' thing or an 'execution' thing, but it's a problem regardless.

ray ferraro of all people making sense:

Hope_Smoke @Hope_Smoke
Ferraro "can you get less from your 4th line if you use D'Amigo-Holland-Ashton? Put Gardiner in the lineup and leave him there"

Hope_Smoke @Hope_Smoke
Ferraro "if you're waiting for Gardiner to become a real physical defenseman than just trade him now."

ope_Smoke @Hope_Smoke
Ferraro "if you want Gardiner to play like Mark Fraser than you're going to be dissapponted every time you see him"

Hope_Smoke @Hope_Smoke
Ferraro "Carlyle does not have the personnel to play the system he likes. Its time to adapt. This grinding banging game doesn't work"
