I'd lean toward Bennett simply because he is, as mentioned, younger and more physical. Not so sure he'll be cheaper or demand less term than Duchene, though.

Instead, you have to think like Zito. Because the time to land Bennett was 4 years ago.
Panthers got Bennett and 6th rounder for Heineman and 2nd rounder
And he got paid 4.4M

Yeah, I know, finding guys before they breakout is hard, but that's why Hughes has the job and we don't.

Hughes tried with Dach (like Bennett an underperforming #4 pick overall)...and he'll keep trying..and hopefully he'll succeed a few times because acquiring undervalued assets is the only way to build a roster that can sustainably compete for the Cup.

No matter who we sign it will be an overpay. The Habs can't compete on a level playing field with the no tax teams in sub-tropical locales with year round golf. Any UFA out there who 2 or more teams want is going to be overpaid. All the good free agents who could help the Habs reach the next level are good enough that there will be multiple teams interested. If we don't overpay we will not get. Simple as that. You just have to keep reminding yourself that the cap is going up and that will make today's overpayment easily digestible a year from now.

I am willing to get let Matheson and 72 go and bring in a another dman (left or right, makes no difference to me) and can move 21 to left if needed

I would also be fine with dumping Laine and Newhook if necessary.

Overpay when your winning cups or contending is one thing

Overpaying a 45-50 point 2C who plays a heavy game at 29 is another

A rising cap helps nobody if its a bad contact

Bruins gave Lindholm 7x7 for 40 points , its a shit contract regardless if the cap goes up

Huigo needs to be cap smart moving forward

Wouldnt shock me if we land Geekie from Boston

They got pushed around enough. Need to get bigger. Hopefully with some skill. It's also not only about us getting pushed around, it's about us being able to push around bigger D.
 
I'm fine with keeping our picks but I wouldn't mind swapping quantity for quality. Like Beck/Roy/Picks to get a higher ceiling guy. Doesn't seem like an exciting crop of FAs this year.

Yep. The team has a lot of flex and assets. They can use them this summer.
 
It’s a 6 player draft. Trade the picks for a 2C or top pairing right D, or package them to get in the top 6, as unlikely as that is.
