Habs Acquire Tanner Pearson and a 3rd for Casey DeSmith

Personal philosophy: I hate giving out unearned roster spots to young players.

I want young players to show that they 100% deserve to make the roster.

I don't want Slafkovsky and/or Farrell to feel like they're guaranteed an NHL roster spot. If they show up to camp and play their asses off, give them a spot. Waive Pezzetta, Lias Andersson, Armia if necessary.

I also want real competition at Laval. If they don't make the team, I want Slafkovsky & Farrell to get pushed from behind by Joshua Roy & Emil Heinemen, maybe even Xavier SImoneau.

I’m with you but as long as the team is willing to waive undeserving veterans. Too many times it’s the vets who are given spots irrelevant to their performance.
Ya. I find the vets keep spots they don't deserve more often than young players being handed spots.

Yeah, but I think a contending team would be much less likely to waive veterans. As a bottom feeding team, most of the veterans are, by default, not good.

Curious to see if the Habs will be courageous enough to waive Armia this year. My guess is no and he will start the year in Montreal in place of a more deserve young forward.

I'm fine with armia being on the team. It he sucks again he should be the press box guy though and not a kid.

Term for depth players is almost a universal killer.

The second you need to find cap space for your top-6 players, you'll be trying to get rid of your depth players. And if your depth players have term, you won't be able to move 'em. It's why the Miles Wood signing by Colorado was beyond preposterous, and don't get me started on what the Crazy Old Bastard in New York did with Engvall and Varlamov. Fucking insanity.

Just look at Ottawa. They signed Mathieu Joseph to a 4 year, $2.95M AAV deal a year ago. He just had 20 points his first year in.

$2.95M isn't a ton, but it's a shitload of money if you have $120k in capspace and you can't re-sign Shane Pinto. There was a rumor that Philly was willing to take on Joseph's contract in return for a first round pick or a specific prospect. I'd honestly consider it if I was Ottawa.

The big issue is when you have too many of these players eating cap space on a shit team

Armia, Hoffman , Byron, Savard , Edmunson , Dvorak ( not our given contract ) is fucken ridiculous

Add the beyond stupid Gally contract , thats a 1/3 of your cap
