Habs News & Notes: 2014 Offseason & Training Camp

Your stats are your stats. You can not ignore the shit and applaud the good.

You seem to like #11, both he and DD are Hobbit-Smurf size (no matter how big you blow up his image).
So you toss out, or cherry pick size as an issue when it suits eh?

Best part of the offseason was getting rid of parros, murray, bou.

I am curious how our Gionta replacement (Sekac and more Chuck) will do.

Not like the habs were goal scoring machines (21st) last year. So I think we will miss gionta's goals but if we want to improve we will need Sekac/moarChuck to not only equal gionta but pass it. Though I have no doubt Gilbert will help a lot by replacing Gorges. Goals against per game was decent at 8th best.

Hopefully the PP can get back to where it normally is (top 5) instead of 19th last year. While the PK can remain top 10 (was 4th).

Not at all. Read my posts.

The difference for anyone that actually watches the games and not just the stats page, Gally and DD are polar opposite type players. #11 lives in the blue paint and fights for every inch he gets, DD is a perimiter player that needs talent on his line to make things happen. Like I said, size is a factor, but I never stated that it was the only one.

Style over substance.

DD produces more but Gallys game looks more impactful.

Ya. I enjoy his style of play too but his in the paint game is less effective than DDs perimiter game. Just sayin...

care to expand on this?

My thoughts: He seems to be thinking about shooting a lot more instead of using his linemates. I also think he gets a lot of defensive zone starts. I think I will try to look a bit deeper at his stats.

He definitely gets more defensive assignments but that's expected.

My issue is that he stopped being creative with the puck. He always makes a safe play, a quick pass while getting in the zone, or a shot going for a rebound but he rarely holds on the puck anymore, waiting for a play to develop or trying a fake or a delayed more to create a better opportunity. And then in the zone he'll often hold back and stay high to be in a good position for the back check. It all adds up to a good defensive game but really doesn't generate much offense anymore. He used to have way more assists to his credit and that number steadily went down. I used to think for a while that he just needed better wingers but none of them have clicked with him in the past two years. Galchenyuk, Gallagher, Vanek, Briere, Gionta, Ryder have all been tried to his wing without success. Vanek was the most telling case, he was barely getting any chances with Plek and immediately exploded when moved to Desharnais. He was complaining/joking about being put on a defensive line because that's what Plekanec does nowadays, he doesn't take any chance and completely focus on his defensive game and gets his chances from turnovers and breakdowns. That's fine but I want that type of play from my 3rd line center, not my second. Every winger that we have will continue to go die on his wing. The only thing that could save him is to have a winger that likes to carry and control the puck, like Kovalev for example, because he can't assume that role. But we don't have anyone like that on our team. DD does it, Galchenyuk can do it at center, that's about it.

Habs were a low scoring team and it wasn't due to DD not being good enough offensively. Boat anchor Bourque along with Briere, Galchenyuk, Gallagher, Gionta etc etc all underperforming was a bigger factor.

Actually DD is in the blue paint quite a bit as well. Almost too much as he's more effective slightly on the perimeter.

DD also has 6 years on Gally and plays alongside Max come hell or high water.

Guys with substance can be effective even when they are not putting up points, and come playoff time, that is what you need. The playoffs are what you build your team for... and DD is not built for the playoffs.

If one only looks at numbers sure. However, BG creates a lot of room and lanes for offense to occur with his style of play. These things aren't measureable but certainly important.

That anchor put up 3 more points than Saint Desharnais in the only season that matters... the playoffs.

Great post.

Though I think a lot of that is coaching.

Or it might be getting older he doesnt have the speed or stamina to be effective at both ends so he cheats on the defensive side (unlike gomez who cheated on the offensive side and still never got anything done).

a) They are measurable actually. At least to some degree...that is what corsi gets at. If he is creating room for offense to occur it shows up in corsi.
b) What does creating lanes, etc to if the puck does not end up in the back of the net.

I am mostly playing devils advocate but a goal is a goal no matter how it is scored. I mean extreme example but Pronger and Lidstrom had two completely different ways of shutting opponents down...both effective.

I don't think it's all coaching. The little things that a player does in the offensive zone to generate chances are generally not coached.

I do believe there is a little bit of stamina issue so he cuts the ice a little bit to make sure he can get back into position. Probably also why you will rarely see him in an offensive corner.

Gally scored more goals than DD.
Only MaxPac had a better corsi rating / 60 than Gally --- to the point about creating offense.
Cant seem to find the penalties drawn stat but I am going to assume that Gally is ahead of DD on that one.

Sadly the on ice goal stats favour DD but on ice shots for favour Gally.

Most importantly Gally is 2 inches taller (and english). :p
