The way they are playing is depressing to say the least. While I didn't expect playoffs (although missing 4 yrs in a row will be an historic first for us) I expected us to be better and actually compete.
Haven’t been around a lot and don’t have all the takes from people on MSL, but he may be the worst coach we have had ever in my time following the team. That D zone coverage scheme is simply not working.

Did people expect us to be better than last year?
With Laine hurt the team is worse this year vs the start of last year.
HuGo clearly did or they wouldn’t have said that the goal this year was to “be in the mix.”

If Laine does indeed return to lineup by months end, I suspect that’ll provide a huge morale boost leading to positive performance impact of the team

Assuming Laine never got injured, I don't think this team's record would have changed more than one or two points. If that.
Laine's like Caufield, just a foot taller. He floats and doesn't bring much beyond offense. Laine being on the roster - remember, Columbus had to compensate us to take him by giving us their second round pick in next year's draft - would not have made our goalies better or improved the defensive structure.

Laine also wouldn’t waive for a couple of other teams - Minny & another team
2nd PP unit - Hutson / Laine would’ve been significantly more dangerous
Changing 1-2 pts puts Habs 2-3 pts back of wildcard spot…. i.e “in the mix”
