Habs Season Thread: 2024-25 Regular Season

He actually traded for Weber, signed Radulov and traded for Andrew Shaw that summer, so it was not the only move. Galchenyuk was coming off a 30 goals season so there was a lot of hope on his having another good one but it didn't happen. Then after a strong start, the team went on a losing streak, Therrien got fired, Julien hired, team recovered but Julien wanted an heavier team and we went on a spree a the deadline for beef instead talent and sure enough we couldn't score. We did win the division that year.

But then Markov and Radulov left and MB made a fateful trade for Drouin and signed Alzner and that was the last "good" season we had.
That wasn’t the order: as Molson said on Melnick’s show. They had come up w a plan $$ allocated for a 5-yr deal to Radulov offered in Jan that season, and 1-yr heavy bonus contract w commitment to renew yearly to Markov, Alzner to replace Emelin who they were going to expose to VGK expansion draft at same AAV, and Drouin was acquired in June to add desperately needed offense after NYR playoff loss. Radulov took that same contract to Stars to match, since no one was willing to offer more term or $z

All that from Molson’s own mouth

I agree with you, just stated what happened that summer. I know they tried to keep Radulov and Markov, but with them gone, the whole plan failed.

Molson is dumb

MBs biggest error was one of strategic vision - just as Serge Savard didn’t see the Russian invasion coming, MB completely missed the NHL change from heavy to speed & skill hockey as a result of owners trying to find a way of not getting clobbered w concussion lawsuits, thus needing to change the game by having rules enforced more rigorously

People forget many of the well respected old guard GM went from being stars in 2014 to idiots in 2016 (Lombardi, Lou, Chia-pet etc.)

Fixed

In their entire 100+ year history Habs have never drafted & developed an 80+ pts / PPG C.

Le Gros Bill was UFA, Pocket Rocket & Lemaire were pre draft

It’s just not in their DNA
Drafted sure, but we acquired a few. Mahovlich, Smith, Damphousse, Muller, Turgeon.

Price is in his prime, you're getting 100+ seasons if not injured. If you're not trading him then you have to give him a team. But it was too little, and we had too many holes.
Yup - MB should’ve simply gone the HuGo route when he initially got the GM job, make Dach, Newhook type deals using 1st rounders , preferably w more short term success!

I remember saying Habs should deal Galchenyuk pick for Johanssen at the time

Sid wasnt available
We didn't need Sid. We definitely could have traded for O'Reilly for example. Maybe keep Eller instead of trading him for Shaw. Ryan Johanssen was available too. Jordan Staal was available as well. None are #1 C but O'Reilly went on to win the Cup a few years later, Eller won it as #3 C, and Johanssen made it to the finals. We could have definitely built up our center line with a few of those guys. The Cup was up for grab during those years, those winners were no dynasties.

Not enough GW

ROR and the Blues they were a solid 23 man group , we had too many depth holes

Nashville had one of the best top 4 D in decades but had our scoring flaws against the Pens

The cup was not coming to Montreal GW anyway you slice it
