Habs Season Thread: Offseason 2025

a smart regime should never come to this ending
Disagree. Keeping an expiring contract for a playoff run is cheaper than trading for a rental.

If this season the Habs are looking like contenders in February, and Laine and Matheson are having solid seasons.... they'd be stupid to trade them away. So, they keep them and go for the Cup. In the off season, if a sign and trade presents itself, you do it.

I don't see sign and trades for UFAs ever being a big thing in hockey. The difference between being allowed to sign for 7 and 8 years isn't enough incentive to forego a bidding war.

There will be the odd case, but it's always going to be very rare.

Leafs were not a contender on a video game , who is kidding who

After that Habs playoff debacle , that core was fucken done

Columbus , Habs how many more inferior teams do you need

They have no spine and will to win 4 rounds

So now 4 years later your losing a 100 point player when you could have got the moon years ago , terrible asset management

Your theory is great if your a true contender not pretender

At the same time the team he wants may need to clear cap space to make it happen

Agreed, although there is an argument that his contract situation should have been addressed last summer.

At the same time, both Colorado and Carolina traded Rantanen despite being a contending team.

speaking of expiring guys, we have two of significance -- Matheson and Laine.

Being the #3 offensive d-man on the depth chart is a fragile spot, so I can see Matheson being traded this summer..especially since we have multiple needs up front.

It's easier to keep Laine, because he's like a trade deadline rental with upside. If he can build on last year, and stay healthy, we might want to keep him, and he might want to stick around in a good situation for him.

Laine wont be back unless its a Bargain Harold discount and 10% less

I wasn't specifically talking about the Leafs or anyone else. Just disagreeing with your assertion that "a smart regime should never come to this ending."

regime has to know here they stand in the NHL food chain and act accordingly
Exactly. It's one thing for fans to be delusional about how good their team is but management should always live in the real world and be willing and able to know when their team is a fraud. MLSE drank the same Kool-Aid as their fanbase.
