Habs Season Thread: Offseason 2025

You know Horvat is a nice name but he is as soft a player as you will ever meet based on his stats. His peripherals around defensive play and decent numbers fora center camouflage that seriously under performing part of his game.

And Barzal doesn’t play center anymore.

Don't care if Horvat is soft, which he isn't.

You make sure you have a tougher center on the fourth line.

The only real mean bitch of a center that's UFA is Bennett and he's a 50-60 point guy at best.
 
So let’s play this fwd a bit: maintaining the assumption a veteran GM such as Holland is engaged by NYI, not having a desire to “strip & rebuild” but rather retool on the fly

Is there potential for some type of Matheson for Eiserman deal? HuGo afterall did hint they wouldn’t scrap the plan to accelerate the process

Draft Schaefer 1OA, potentially deal Dobson + Avs 1st for Chi 3OA to pick Hagens AND trade for Matheson for present NYI D group
- minute eating LD is lacking w NYI, Pelech played the role but is a 16-18TOI D

By all accounts none of the top end of this draft class is NHL ready - with Misa being the closest

Islanders are not reading the 1st pick. It’s a great marketing tool for their new arena and depressed brand.

Plus one doesn’t do that sequence of trades with Matheson involved. You may do it for a guy like Owen power or Bowen Byrem

And Eiserman does not help us

That’s not how the lineup would work. There is simply not going to be a perfect solution.
1) Underperforming young player (already have Kirby)
2) Overpaid UFA (Bennett or Tavares)
3) over the hill vet with large contract but short term (Strome in Anaheim)

Pick your poison.

Unfortunately I don’t see Matheson netting a young D like Power or Byram - but a potential high ceiling prospect W having question marks is a possibility IMO

Eiserman aligns w HuGo’s continued vision of building - specialist goal scorer a la Laine w more pace & familiarity w Habs org (Gorton & Nicholas)

What I’m saying is there’s no need to involve the habits in any of these deals when they can just go out and get the guys in Buffalo they’ll be worth it
