Hello Jake!

I’m moving my reply over to this thread since it’s canes trade related not just general trade deadline stuff

My only concern on Ponomarev was I wish the Canes gave him a bit more of a look and a chance with the big team sprinkled in over the past two seasons to really see what you had. I realize the space was limited for a spot but two games was just a teaser. Gotta give to get but I agree he looks like an nhl regular that could produce offense.
Yea, same. I do like the trade and you definitely have to give up good pieces to get good players, even rentals. I just have a feeling that Ponomarev is going to be really good somewhere for a long time. Hopefully, we get over the playoff hump with Guentzel and/or he’s willing to play here long term and Dundon is willing to pony up the cash to keep him here long term. But, if he gets them to the finals, the pieces we gave up were worth it…..and the fact Pitt is retaining 25% giving us more flexibility to possibly add one more depth piece today

I think Guentzel fits this team perfectly. He has skill and loves to get to the ‘dirty areas’ and generates tons of good chances. Plus he’s like 3rd or 4th in the league at shot attempts from the slot per game. It’s like he was built for this team.

Woke up to the good news this morning. I think Bunting was getting better and better late in the season, but this is an amazing trade by GMDW. We gave up little to potentially get quite a lot. Let's see if we're done before the deadline ends.

This guy covers the Rangers for the USAToday network of newspapers. He makes a good point about the Rangers inability to get the deal done. All of Ponomarev, Koivunen and Lucius would be the Rangers 3rd best prospect. On the Canes, Koivunen was ranked 7th, Pono 10th and Lucius outside the top 10. The Canes prospect pool is just so deep, GMDW didn’t give up any of his top poropsects. I was afraid the deal included Nadeau and Morrow, thrilled it didn’t.

Our friend Tony Androckitis reports that Ty Smith will stay in Wilkes-Barre. So Cmaleski loses 2 from the prospect pool and 1 from the AHL pool, but gains another AHLer to track. ;)

The Cade Webber trade to Toronto for a 6th round pick subtracted one more from the prospect pool. Still 5 and a half hours left to work on moving out some Russian prospects before the deadline, we have a ton of them.

This is why draft picks are valuable for the Canes. We kind of have been sitting on all these prospects for a while (since the Trocheck trade) and now finally took the opportunity to leverage our massive pool. Ponomarev and Koivunen were 2nd round picks. Lucius was a 4th round pick. If you look at our prospect pool still we are still stacked with plenty of kids who are potential NHLers.

As for Guentzel, the jury will be out of course on how he does away from Pittsburgh and Crosby. But he sure looks like a fit for how we play. I dunno if he is really willing to sign here long term, but he gets some time to see what we are all about.

I'm with Corey Lavalette on Pono. He's basically the same player as Drury, and a good roster doesn't really have room for two of those guys. He's a quality prospect, but limited, and that's the kind of guy you don't lose sleep over including in a trade. Koivunen is the one in that trade with the Top 6 upside, but he flopped so hard in the AHL last year that I'm not that concerned about losing him either. Bottom line, with all the conditions on the picks Waddell managed to get Pittsburgh to give us a top line winger for a pile of stuff. Classic NHL2K stuff from Donny.

From what I remember of Ty Smith when he was a Devil, he's basically Dylan Coghlan without the huge bomb of a shot. So, thanks ... I guess. He gives the Canes cover if they find somebody to take DeAngelo off their hands, but otherwise I wouldn't be shocked if he gets non-tendered this summer.

Thanks to Michael Bunting & best wishes in Pittsburgh. It took a bit for him to fit into RBA's system, but he was a good player for the Hurricanes.

So what are the line configurations when Guentzel is ready to go? Should be fun to see how this all shakes out. I hope he is persuaded to stick around long term.

Jim

Supposedly it’s a broken finger, he’s supposed to be back shortly. He skated yesterday morning, so, while I don’t think we’ll see him on the weekend, it’s not out of the question to see him in a week.
There was some chatter in Pittsburgh that they slow played his return once the Pens decided to put him on the market. If he's in hockey shape, Guentzel should be good to go fairly quickly.

I don't see him playing anywhere other than on Aho's line, the question being whether they stick with Svech on the other wing or do something different. Otherwise, I guess you could put him with Drury and Necas, but that seems like a weird fit to me.

The biggest criticism of Dubas for the trade is that he didn’t get a guaranteed 1st rounder for the best player available on the rental market. So that’s twice Waddell has taken Dubas to the cleaners…thanks for Seth Jarvis too.

Dubas too has been loyal to a fault to his Soo Junior roots guys and Bunting back in the fold was what he viewed as a nice prize in the deal. The NHL Morning Skate guys on Sirius were actually hinting that Pitt did the Canes a solid by taking Bunting for two more years at that $4.5 million cap hit.

I mean, if the market was that soft, then Dubas got what he could. Pono can play in the NHL right now, and Bunting doesn't suck. He just wasn't a great fit here and I think he had trouble finding focus in a different system. Pittsburgh will be a lot more like Toronto in that regard. So, a guaranteed 2nd rounder, a veteran NHL middle 6 forward and a young bottom 6 forward who's ready to roll right now plus three casts in the middle of Carolina's deep prospect pool. It's not nothing, even if it is just a big pile of basic stuff.
