Here is a good source of discussion

Last night on twitter, some were ripping me a new one over my view that Geoff has no obligation to pay for Tim Bozon's medical bills. I stated that there could be cap implications (not sure) if we did as while he is under contract with an ELC, he plays in junior, not on the team etc.

Needless to say, internet indignation took over and I was ripped for being heartless, a moron (not the first time someone has called me that so who cares), told to shut up, Geoff should pay for the family etc.

What sayest thou, should the Canadiens pay for a non hockey illness for a player not playing for the team at this time?

It's 100K, right?

Small price for Geoff to gain favourable PR and add to the 'classy' brand attribute that has been part of the Habs image for decades.

Bouzon is not Canadian citizen ?!

if he was under pro contract with club, should club pay for his medical expense ?!

still do not understand how the WHL does not have insurance for this

is it because it isn't a hockey related thing?

Well it is interesting in that he has an ELC, but we aren't paying him, he is still in junior. It seems to me his junior team should have medical insurance for their players.

Ch, while you have a good point, would Geoff have to pay for all his employees' bills? Say for example, Jeannette in accounting goes to Florida and is bitten by a shark, and is in hospital for weeks, does he pay for her too?

I don't care if he pays or if he doesn't but the vileness of the indignation because I dared say that they should not be calling on him to pay was beyond anything I had seen before.

they do but they don't cover 100K

of course, if he was Canadian, govt insurance would take care of it and he wouldn't see a bill

Non-hockey related illness it should really be the player's responsibility, regardless if they play for us or not. I mean, if I came down with an illness, it's not my company's job to pay for my treatment. It should be up to me to ensure that I have appropriate insurance coverage - if that's offered through work, all the better. In reality, it's the WHL's fault for not providing adequate insurance coverage for international players.

Now, if the Habs org wanted him to move to a different hospital because there was a better doctor there, or wanted any sort of say or input into the treatment, then yes, they should pay.

Now, what we should do is likely at least have the org match any donations by others. Good PR, and it's not too expensive. Pretty sure it wouldn't have a big effect on the bottom line and would have a good PR move.

From a PR perspective, nobody much cares about Jeannette except her family. The Bozon story got a good amount of coverage...more importantly, who pays the bills has become a story of its own.

It's a no-brainer for Geoff to pay (or set up a trust, etc). Small drop in the overall marketing budget.

okay let me try again

do not understand how the WHL does not have insurance that covers this

Also good karma among players ie "The Habs ownership group really take care if you". We hear so many negatives about why players don't want to sign here...anything that helps counteract that is a nice positive.

maybe their insurance only covers more modest amounts...but I agree, these rare cases should be accounted for and probably wouldn't raise the premiums all that much.

my guess is he is not allowed to

i believe portland got a big fine for a cellphone to call home

100k for non hockey related stuff might be a slippery slope type of thing

sure in this case it is medical....but what if it is bozon's mother that is sick...can the habs pay for that?
does it give the habs an unfair advantage when signing prospects?

that said...just set up a booth at the next habs game for rolex, xpo, etc to make a donation directly

if he's not allowed to directly write the 100K cheque, Geoff needs to seem like he's exhausted every other avenue to help the family (charity trust, donations, contest, etc)

hehe

just saying the WHL should have a plan for this

not like this is rare...what about car accidents, etc ? what if it happened in the states? etc

sure it might be the responsiblity of the individual...but even in university i had to have extra insurance (either through the uni or proof i had it else where)

same issues

but ya... a "one dollar from every beer at the hab game" is donated to the Bozon Fund

Or charity boxing event. Brandon Prust vs Justin T.
