Hey, Italians

I'm just curious how many of you actually speak Italian. I'm in the process of learning it using apps, but it's slow going, considering I am Italian and my parents spoke it and I worked construction my whole life and understood what everyone was saying. You'd think I'd be good at this. 🤷‍♂️

I'm very good with my hands at least.

But i need a bunch of drinks before my italian can flow at all.

it's mostly very bad. Definitely understand much more than speak.

I'm fluent with the swear words. Nothing made me laugh harder than a group of Italians having an animated conversation in Italian but swearing in English. Ah fack!🤣

Same, I know the swear words. But I recently got my Italian citizenship and if I want to retire there I got to get cracking.

Ironically, my wife who is not Italian speaks it much better than me , as she had to pass a language test for her Italian citizenship apllication.

Oh, nice. I want to go back there, too. Maybe not to live, but long enough to bypass winter. My old boss has a place in Tuscany and says I can use it anytime I want. Retirement there would be a dream.

I spoke it as a kid. Now I need a 3-4 days hearing it in Italy and I’m pretty much fluent Can get around and small talk like a pro but really can’t discuss any weighty topics.

That's pretty good, though. I'm hoping to get there. I'm finding that just watching Italian content on YouTube helps a lot. There is an app that is a lot like Netflix and has tons of movies in all kinds of languages. I may try that too. :)

Which app?

My singing Italian pronunciation is good from years of singing Italian art songs as a kid and through university, but I'm not conversant; read it ok-ish bc it's a romance language. If you speak the language to me at a stroll using basics, my pretty okay Spanish might bail me out. Maybe. 😉

Good idea...but I would watch something light and mid like a sitcom with lots of small talk. Not going to learn words you're gonna use if you're watching a high end crime drama set in Naples. In a similar vein, watch regular folk in Insta reels.

the Tuscan dialect is the closest to the official language
