The reason why Hutson is always at the rink and Roy isn't is because for Roy, practicing is work, a job. For Hutson it's a passion, something he loves. For him, this will never be work.and never just a job. For Hutson, hockey is a vocation. Roy just wants to get paid for something he happens to be pretty good at doing, for lack of anything better to do at the moment.
He is squandering his talent. With hard work, Roy could be a serviceable NHLer for a decade. Maybe not a superstar but certainly better than Pezzetta, who is only in the league because he plays and practices as though his life depends on it. But Roy isn't interested in doing the hard work so he'll be stuck in the AHL as other prospects pass him by.
