Leaf Rumours

There are very few dmen who rank highly in all 3 phases of the game -- offense (gls, pts), physical (hits, blks, fights) and defense (mins, pk, quality of comp).

A lot of guys do well in 1, maybe 2 of the phases. Very few rank high in all 3. Phaneuf is one of the few guys who does.

A - Phaneuf
B - Chara

Yup.

Not easy playing 25 mintues, being the 'shutdown' dman on your team and scoring 50 points.

When Phaneuf had those huge offensive seasons in Calgary, he was used a lot differently. He didn't play against the opposing teams best players. He wasn't used as a 'shutdown' dman. He could focus more on the offensive, physical side of the game.

But I like Toronto Phaneuf over Calgary Phaneuf, despite the lower point totals. Toronto Phaneuf is a much more well rounded player.

Toronto has done a nice job of turning Phaneuf into a workhorse #1 defenceman, toughest defensive minutes, relying on him mainly to provide offence on the powerplay.

And Phaneuf, for better or for worse is seen by most of the MLSE organization, from the players to the gondola(I know it doesn't exist any more) as a heartless, gutless, pig. Watch the video, of game seven, last two minutes. He might as well have handed two center ice faceoffs to the Bruins.

Now you can Corsi, Fenwick and stat your ass off Zeke and whoever else, but that guy is the GOAT of all GOATS for losing the series. AFTER Jake Gardiner and Franson almost singlehandedly won the series for us. He is a goner, either through the season or after the season is over. Quote me on that.

I've watched the last two minutes of game 7, watched Lucic get to one rebound first (with Gunnar being closer to him than Phaneuf), and watched Chara set a screen in front of the net.

watched it many times.

but yes, you're quoted.

And I've said for some time, I like Phaneuf's point totals, but he's not the beast his fans make him out to be.

He isn't as physical as he could be, he does make a fair number of mistakes, and his offense is for lack of a better word weird since he spent a lot of time simply unable to hit the net in his time as a Leaf.

Here's the rub.

If you're hockey-watching ability told you that Phaneuf misses the net more than other scoring dmen, then your hockey-watching ability is very bad. It is quite easy to look up the goals, shots, and missed shots stats and see that Phaneuf has been one of the very BEST at HITTING the net amongst all scoring defensemen.

you get that? not one of the worst, like your eyes told you, but one of the BEST.

now, since your eyes lied to you so badly about his ability to hit the net, why would you trust what they say about any other part of his game?

Is this the first time you're hearing this?

How many times during this season and the last couple was this board and even the commentators remarking about how he kept missing the net?

Where he ranks among leaders in this department isn't really important to me. The fact is he does seem to miss a lot, but then regained some form near the midway mark of the season.

The facts aren't important to you?

You think it's better to perpetuate the myth?

The dmen who miss the net the most, tend to be the best offensive dmen in the league.

It's like giveaways. The guys who lead the league in giveaways are typically the guys who always have puck. The best offensive dmen.

Missing the net, or giving up the puck is actually a good thing. Because it means you have the puck a lot to begin with.

Phaneuf's shooting percentage last season was the best of his career.

Shooting percentage is the number of goals you score based on the number of shots you take.

Missing the net doesn't count as a shot.

Anyway, I don't know where to find these stats, nor do I care to spend hours analyzing them. We all certainly made lots of noise about Phaneuf missing the net on the PP a ton. He got better as the season went on, but has often been frustrating in this regard.

the commentators, and you, are wrong.

flat out wrong.

the numbers are clear - phaneuf is one of the most efficient shooters in the league amongst top scoring dmen.

there's no arguing this.

if you think phaneuf misses the net too often, then you're suffereing from tunnel vision, and this undoubtedly applies to your analysis of the rest of his game.

Well, last year clearly was an exception by the numbers, even if it didn't seem like he fared any differently.

But I think the previous three or four years he was missing the net a lot, as he did two seasons ago based on what we see above.

So if you're hanging your hat on one season, that seems very unlike you, as someone who bows to stats as much as you do.
