Leaf Rumours

Thats the worst part of the contract, Clarkson is only going to get worse not better. He isn't the biggest guy at 6'1 200. Guys like him, who play that style of game and aren't huge usually break down in their early 30's. And he turns 30 this year.

So 39 games into his Leafs career, he's suddenly an old, broken-down winger?

I get that people are disappointed by his contract (myself included), but why wish the worst for the guy?
 
No one is wishing the worst for the guy. Its just no fair to place unrealistic expectations on Clarkson that he can never live up to.

Clarkson is what he is at this point in his career. He's not getting any better. He's not suddenly going to become a 40-50 point 2nd line top 6 winger.

He was a grinder in New Jersey and he's a grinder here. Only difference is he got top PP time in New Jersey.

But giving him that huge contract, and #71 and selling him as the second coming of Wendel and all that talk about 25-30 goals. He could never live up to that.

Huh? No one's wishing. Everyone here would absolutely love it if Clarkson turned it around. Some people just won't waste their time getting their hopes up.

Seriously dude? You don't remember the charity events and promos the Leafs had him doing with Wendel Clark almost immediately after we signed him? And do you think it's just a coincidence that he picked a number that's the mirror image of Clark's?

to be fair, clarkson might be an old broken down winger 39 games into his leafs career.

mirtle wrote an article showing career progressions of 'power forwards', which he classified by 15 goal / 80 pim seasons, and players tend to fall off pretty sharply around 30.

I'm not disappointed in Clarkson. I am disappointed in Nonis. I knew he wouldn't be that guy from day one. Its not me that keeps referencing him as potentially a 25 goal 40-50 point 2nd line winger.

Agreed, can't you all resurrect the Clarkson thread that exists, and argue away there. Seriously, save this for some rumours.

example.... (totally made up) but what it Nonis sees the awesomeness of Pavelski with Kessel and JVR and tries a big move... just sayin... (maybe get this thread back onto some rumours)

For Pavelski? It'd probably be Kadri, Rielly, and a 1st. That'd be enough to start to not have SJ hang up the phone.
