Leaf Rumours

He's certainly more deserving of a 2nd than Moore was.
Well, Moore was also in the middle of a 41 points in 63 games season, is a very good defensive player and a good PKer which can be used on teams' 3rd line.

Stemp is 10 points lower than Moore over 63 games pace, and isn't nearly as good defensively or in PK. He just isn't a good utility player.

I doubt Stemp will fetch a 2nd ... I sure don't mind if he does.

But they didn't. The Wings still got a shot, like everyone else. They just tried to balance the odds to favour teams who are worse.

It was a fair set up.

I really don't see a problem with giving good teams a chance at getting any pick in the draft as high as #1, and giving bad teams a little bit better chance at getting a higher pick.

You don't have a season in 2005, so all you can go off of is previous years. Its the only fair way to do it.

Good teams had a way better shot at a high pick than they would have if the season were played.

Our last 2 deadlines:

Gill for 2nd + 5th
Antropov for 2nd + conditional pick
Moore for 2nd
Kilger for 3rd
Belak for 5th

Stemp should get a 2nd.

That Antropov deal is still a bad joke.

Yes, Antropov trade was a bad joke.

I still can't see Stemp netting us a 2nd ... but kudos to Burke if he can.

The thing is, since Burke got here, he's undersold on every player he trades away but Moore.

Antropov, Stralman, Kubina all got less than market value.

Stralman was a 7th round pick looking like a disappointment at the NHL level and Burke parlayed that into a 2nd rounder. Not sure how that's getting "less than market value." Burke got exactly what he should have gotten for Anton.

I guess Stralman trade wasn't so bad at the moment ... in hindsight it looks bad though.

Still, he sure got under market value in the antropov and Kubina trades.

Kubina also wasn't undersold.

He got what he wanted. Cap space. No team was going to give up picks and prospects for Kubina based on all the rumours we have heard. In fact the only deals we heard for Kubina had bad contracts coming back.

Whether or not he should have kept Kubina instead of Bueach or Komi, or whoever is a fair debate to have, but value wise, he got all he was going to in a trade for Kubina. And much more than Fletch traded him for before Kubina but the kibosh on it (Kyle Maclaren).

And Antropov was really just an unfortunate reality of last years deadline market. No one wanted to give up firsts. Burke admitted publicly to wanting one. No one would give it to him.

I don't think a bottom unit defeseman (Exelby) is fair return for a top unit defenseman who consistently gets you 40-50 points, can log close to 30 min a game, and leads the team in +/- signed to a very reasonable contract.

Kubina contract doesn't inflate his trade value (like Kaberle's) but doesn't deflate it neither.

You sure can't ask for much if you're trying to unload a bad contract on a bad player ... but for a top unit d-man like Kubina, even if Burke wanted to unload his contract he should've got better return.

He couldn't have.

The best Fletcher could do was a bad contract who is out of the NHL.
The best Burke could do was a striaght up salary dump.

No picks and prospects were coming back for Kubina. Maybe if he waited till the deadline, as a rent a player, but not in the offseason.

He didn't trade for Exelby because he likes Exelby. Exelby is a place holder who won't be back next year. He was just a salary dump by Atlanta. Burke traded for cap space.

Probably not. Maybe trading him in the first place was stupid.

But you can't trade him for more than you can trade him for.

He'll let him walk because he has sucked shit as a Leaf. That doesn't mean he didn't think he was adding some toughness on the back end last summer.

Burke actually sounded stoked on the idea of this defense corps going into the season:

Beauchemin - Komisarek
Finger - Schenn
Exelby - Frogren

I don't know about that. He came out last deadline and said people made offers for White but he wouldn't move him.

Then he said if he traded Kaberle he'd have to replace him.

Then he brought Gunn and Mikus over from europe.
